About BEFORE DARK: Halloween Horror Nights

BEFORE DARK is a series of articles documenting the park’s setup for Halloween Horror Nights. With just about a month to go before we face Infinite Fear at Universal Studios Singapore’s epic scarefest, the park will be slowly adding new stuff. If there are any relevant updates about the event, I’ll include them in this series too.

The Jurassic World: Explore and Roar event has concluded, and everything that had to do with dinosaurs were promptly removed. New for this year: Horror Nights presence at the park’s iconic archway.

Last year’s metal frame arch is also back. Maybe the entrance will be covered with portraits of this year’s icons again since there are so many. It could be like the mirror shards of HHN6 (Lady Death) and the large billboards of HHN7 (7Sinisters).

Opening Scaremony show setup

The stage is slowly reconfigured into Eight Lakes Psychiatric Hospital where Infinite Fear will manifest. The Opening Scaremony show, also titled Infinite Fear will be performed here at 7:30PM during HHN8 Event Nights. There will be other show times later during the night, so don’t worry if you don’t make it for the opening or couldn’t get a good spot.

Gone are all the Raptor Containment Units and Jurassic World embellishments.

In their place – an extended top tier of the stage and scattered pieces of rubble.

The Jurassic World Gates are removed, and these walls will be covered with big LED displays in place of the usual projections.

Zombie Laser Tag

This year’s Zombie Laser Tag (ZLT) is held at the Jurassic Park zone.

There are no sets and props in this area of the park yet, except this curious black box/ mini building that is blocking the way.

Probably ZLT participants will collect and return their Laser Tag battle rifles here. Which means this is where the ZLT experience starts and ends.

Apocalypse: EARTH

During the HHN8 Press Conference, it was revealed that the Apocalypse: EARTH scare zone will have projection mapping effects and would be a delightful place to take photos. So those overhead lighting setups will return.

Cannibal

A couple of straw/mud huts have appeared along Ancient Egypt.

In the Cannibal scare zone, you can expect a grisly show called Blood & Bones. The stage structure is up – and it’s perfectly aligned with the Obelisk of Ancient Egypt. The shelter beside the Obelisk has been converted into a black box, probably for stage equipment.

The area behind the Obelisk is blocked off – will we see the return of pyrotechnics here? It’s been a while.

Pantages Hollywood Theater

Pantages Hollywood Theater has closed since 19 Aug for “change of show” and will reopen on 1 Sep.

While we know DEAD Talks will be performed here during Halloween Horror Nights 8, the park hasn’t announced what will be replacing Elmo’s TV Time. Maybe last year’s Trick or Treat with Sesame Street show will return.

HHN8 Scare Actor Appearances

Meet some of HHN8’s iconic characters (icons) at roadshows promoting the event.

Lady Oiwa – Icon from The Haunting of Oiwa haunted house. In case you don’t know, this is Japan’s most famous ghost story, and USS apparently has the bragging rights for being the first international theme park (ahead of USJ) to bring the story to life at Halloween Horror Nights.

The story goes: An unfaithful husband (Tamiya Iemon) has poisoned his wife, Yotsuya Oiwa.

Affected by the poison, Lady Oiwa loses her mind, her hair, and becomes horribly disfigured. After dying, Lady Oiwa manifests in new forms (including the iconic lantern forms) to haunt her husband, ultimately driving him completely mad. I guess we will experience the various hauntings in this Japanese-themed horror attraction. Preferably without the same outcome.

In traditional Japanese art, Lady Oiwa was depicted with varying levels of deformity. I am not sure which ‘stage’ is this – but it seems quite early if Universal Studios Singapore is doing a faithful adaptation. The tale is rather gruesome. I can already imagine which prosthetics and masks from past haunted houses’ characters will be making a return.

Cannibal Chief – Leader of the manhunters in the Cannibal scare zone.

The leader of the Cannibal tribe will star in the Blood & Bones show, where a human will be sacrificed.

There’s a supernatural element to the ceremony, which we’ll all find out at the show.

The legendary ghost of our region, Pontianak, will have a haunted house of her own this year.

Pontianak’s story will be experienced in detail – especially the moments when she returns as a vicious spirit seeking revenge.

Yin Demon – Standing guard at the Chinese-themed Pagoda of Peril haunted house, Yin feeds on trapped souls for power and life.

This is one of the tallest characters this year, and the wheel of fire wreath further extends his elaborate look.

A valid Student Pass is required to enter the park using Student Tickets.

For every ticket purchased at roadshows, you can choose a free gift while stocks last. Choices include a “popsocket” accessory (a retractable grip for smartphones and things) or an LED lanyard.
