Songs of Death – Halloween Horror Nights 3

HHN3 - Songs of Death queue entrance

Experience the gruesome tale of ambition and vanity at the Songs of Death Haunted House. Desperate to remain as the Chinese Opera Academy’s only diva, the Maiden of the Opera strikes anyone who threatens her place.

About this Haunted House
Songs of Death is a standalone Haunted House, taking place in between Jurassic Park and Ancient Egypt. A tent was set up in a backstage area. Due to the position and shape of this tent (long and extends forwards), this house has an interesting “always moving forward” walking direction until the mid-point.

Themed to Chinese Opera, this is a unique concept for Halloween Horror Nights and truly, has no equal in other HHN events. There is an incredible attention to the look of the scare actors, especially for the Maiden. This house is scarier than last year’s Asian-themed Death Alley, which is set in “Chinatown” over at New York. There are strange rooms and a lot of frightening scare actors (most of which are not featured here) that would shock guests who are already afraid of Chinese Opera in the day. Yes, some people are. I would also like to commend on choice and placement of the sound effects and ambient music used in Songs of Death, as they were well picked and effectively enhanced the experience.

This entry only provides a glimpse of what Songs of Death has in store. Along with photos, here’s an audio tour of the house to tempt you into meeting the Maiden and hearing her sing… in person.

Songs of Death - Queue

The queue entrance for Songs of Death starts at the edge of The Lost World.

The words on the stone archway is a homonymic play on the phrase 阴魂不散 (lit Lingering Ghost). Here, it reads 音魂不散, which can be translated to mean a lingering, haunting voice.

The queue turns into Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure. While waiting, you can also get a photo souvenir. This is a green screen photo op showing the Chinese Opera Theatre/Academy in the background. 6R prints at $10 each and can be purchased before Opera Academy.

The Opera Theatre

The journey begins at the Chinese Opera Theatre. A cozy venue with a few rows of benches and an elaborate opera stage.

HHN3 - Songs of Death - Peerless Theatre

The words read 無雙劇院 (Simplified 无双剧院) which literally means Peerless Theatre.

Ominous Opera music begins to drift… Have a listen:

This audio recording covers most of the scenes in Songs of Death. Moving on…

HHN3 - Songs of Death

An opera performer stands alone on stage. She does not sing, but slowly dances – as if in a trance. Blood flows from her right eye, and there is a visible stain on her costume – right at the heart.

HHN3 - Songs of Death - Ancestral Tablets

The path leads backstage into the Academy building. At the foyer, there are rows of ancestral tablets – that start to shift violently upon approach.

Further on – the make-up room: dusty and seemingly abandoned. Seemingly is the word.

HHN3 - Songs of Death - Corridor

An uneventful corridor… is where the Maiden makes her first appearance.

Our backstage tour leads into more creepy spaces – one of which is a haunted room where musical instruments are stored.

The corridors and rooms are filled with scenes of violence – courtesy of the Maiden of the Opera.

HHN3 - Songs of Death

But after the Dormitories, prepare for a dramatic scene (which is easily missed). The Maiden rips the heart out of her competition, literally. With her black magic, she keeps the victim in a soul-less state.

Narrowly escaping from the Maiden, visitors will find themselves at the back section of the Academy – eerie corridors, that seem to be empty… or is it?

HHN3 - Songs of Death

HHN3 - Songs of Death

The path turns into a dark store room, which is filled with offerings and ritual objects.

HHN3 - Songs of Death

In a room lined with glass, a ritual seems to be taking place (or already happened). Scrolling tapestries of incantations surround an inanimate body in the middle, while joss papers are strewn over the floor. Dispersed voices of a prayer chant can be heard.

HHN3 - Songs of Death - Offerings

Walking out of the ritual chamber, the path descends into a maze of mirrors.

HHN3 - Songs of Death - Mirror Maze

Noticeably weakened and disheveled, The Maiden appears to be trapped in a dark maze of mirrors. In her final attempt to escape, she taunts and attempts to drag visitors into the same fate.

HHN3 - Songs of Death

The Maiden’s last moments – her once-flawless face has split and broken off in large fragments. She flinches and drowns into madness…

Songs of Death - Exit

Flickering lamps show the way – It appears that we have escaped from the Chinese Opera Academy.

What do you think?
Is the Maiden of the Opera finally subdued and put to rest at the end of this Haunted House experience? Or will she be back with an encore of her Songs of Death?

i like this attraction the most. i rarely get spook but it spook me a few times. it keep remind me of hungry ghost festival.

the inanimate body is she real person? i saw her foot sticking out n she does look real. i was thinking n cant seem to figure out if she real person.

from the peranakan then death alley to song of the death…wonder if HHN4 will have another of a chinese theme attraction…

i notice queue for this is shorter compare to the other 2. i think alot ppl miss it as the entrance wasnt in a scare zone make it easy to miss.

manage to go twice. without express pass was 15mins then used my pass it was 45..
but i notice queue tend to get stuck as i realise ppl stop at the entrance dare not enter..

when i enter the table wasnt moving n it was cover in a mesh or netting…hmmm

This is my fave house during the opening night. I find it really scary and the scare actors are really in their characters.

But for some reason, the atmosphere changed last Saturday (’twas my 5th visit). It was not that scary anymore and I find that the scare actors are not in their elements.

Also, the crowd control has gone haywire last Saturday. The crew manning the queue just allowed the people to keep coming in, creating a massive jam at the entrance (where the tablets are located). We were stuck at that area for about 2 to 3 mins because people in front would stop and move back every after scary spot.

Hi, my friends went to USS halloween last friday (25/10) and surprisingly they said they had enough time to tour finish all 3 haunted houses as well as taking a few mummy rides, WITHOUT the fast pass.
Was wondering why was that the case, as last friday was supposed to be a peak period, no? haha.
Is it because many visitors have gone to the event during the first few days?
Will this thursday be less crowded too? 🙂

    cheers!

It has always been possible to finish all 3 Haunted Houses without Express Passes as long as you are at the park early and enter the queue when the wait times were shorter. Some readers have even told me that they finish all three houses at around 9-10pm.

Last Friday was designated as a peak night, however – that was the park’s assumption. As student discounts were not available for that night, there might’ve been less people in the park actually. Also, there were changes inside the Haunted Houses to quicken the flow of people.

This Thursday is expected to be less crowded because it is a weekday night. However, it’s also just an assumption. Who knows, maybe a lot of people want to attend the event on the actual Halloween night too!
