Overview and Thoughts
Wedged between Chatterbox Charlie’s Vaudeville Horrors on one end and Karang Guni: The Cursed Collection on the other, Ancient Egypt’s Necropolis has become a true crossroads at HHN14, with houses at either end and Roaming Horrors passing through in both directions.
Which explains why the street is almost bare. At rope drop, I watched guests sprint the entire Egyptian stretch toward Karang Guni, and the stampede barely let up after that. Add characters roaming in both directions, and any scenic set in the middle of the street would be one more thing to collide with. This brings Singapore closer to how other Universal parks, Japan especially, have long run their scare zones: characters roaming familiar streets, with little built around them. Long-time fans here may need to adjust, since our scare zones were once themed almost like open-air haunted houses.
It’s also been a while since Ancient Egypt hosted a scare zone. The last was Cannibal in 2018, after the smaller Beast Club in 2015 and Canyon of the Cursed in 2014. The souk idea isn’t new here either: Convention of Curses in 2013 gave every vendor its own booth, and Bizarre Bazaar in 2012 got there first. The HHN14 crossroads keeps the bargaining in name only.
Early in the season, the zone leaned on lighting alone, a riot of blue, green and pink that felt more like a rave than an ancient underworld. Things changed on 15 Oct 2026, when a projector archway went up facing the Revenge of the Mummy show building. The rainbow wash has since been toned down, and the facade now comes alive with short looping sequences: glowing inscriptions with a serpent coiling across them, Anubis, eclipses, creatures crumbling from stone, swarming rats, bugs, spiders and plenty of snakes. Best of all, the projection runs all night, so there’s no waiting around for a showtime. You just catch it whenever you pass through.
It even reaches across the lagoon. From Minion Land, the temple glows on the far shore.
Back to the entities of the Necropolis: Sasu Soul Eater rules over it all, with Crypt Keepers towering on stilts, the fearsome Wraiths, Soul Traders, a Doomsayer and Shrouded Captives prowling the haze. Keep an eye out for an old friend too: the giant spider from Dark Dreams in HHN12 has crawled back for another round.
Stand right before the temple and the facade fills your entire view, alive with cobras coiling and rearing above the entrance.
Step back and the archway frames the view, cutting across the lower half, though the top of the facade still comes through clearly from here.
Towering on stilts, the Crypt Keepers stand watch over the crossroads and escort their master through it. Nothing gets past them. Not even you.
And here is the kingpin himself. Sasu Soul Eater rules the crossroads, and every bargain made here ends with him.
The Snake Wraith carries a set of scales, one pan in each hand, weighing every soul that passes. With a crown of serpents for hair, you’d best not meet her gaze for too long.
The Spider Wraith doesn’t bother hiding what she is. Legs splayed and claws at the ready, she’s itching to slice a soul or two, and barely holding back.
The Soul Traders drift through the crowd, glowing orbs held out like an offer. Whatever they promise in return, the price is always the same: your soul.
The Doomsayer shuffles through the haze, clutching a handful of trinkets. Stay away, unless you’d like your misfortune foretold.
The largest creature roaming the Necropolis can’t exactly sneak up on anyone. You’ll see it coming long before it reaches you. Whether you get out of its way in time is another matter.
The Shrouded Captives wander the crossroads looking for someone to take their place. Don’t get too close.
The wraiths are always on the lookout for fresh victims, and if a captive finds a replacement, you’re next.
