Overview and Thoughts
The dark jungle at Universal Studios Singapore’s Jurassic Park is transformed to yet another haunted village for Halloween Horror Nights. This time, it is loosely based on stories of an old
“kampung” (or village, in Malay) in Singapore, along with some spaces that are now part of Sembawang Park and areas in Singapore’s North region. Some of the old structures still remain, and so is the practice of people leaving unwanted items and that the land is also a burial ground. These aspects have been adapted in the scare zone.
Somewhat similar to The Chalet Hauntings haunted house back in 2019, The Lost Kampung offers a compendium of regional ghosts and mystical beings, with a focus on Malay ghosts for this zone – after all it was a kampung.
And now, here is my own interpretation and story for The Lost Kampung:
Drawn to its dark reputation, you decided to take a trip down to this abandoned park, which was once a bustling village. Local legends describe it as a dumping ground for the unwanted, where negative energy and curses have festered over time. Even its inhabitants have all departed, leaving the place to be consumed by nature.
The chilly wind carries endless howling, and whispers of dark history buried within. You slip through the park’s overgrown gates, hoping to find an easy path in.
A villager snaps at you for intruding, warning you not to go further.
But of course, you’re already here, why turn back? What right does that pakcik have to tell you what to do?
The path forward looks rather… uneventful, and should be safe.
A sudden blood-curdling rattle pierces the night’s silence, and a shadowy figure emerges from the darkness. The villagers are coming back.
Something is hopping ahead. It’s a Pocong, a shroud-bound corpse. As it hops and struggles to break out of its decaying binds, you make a run for it before it could get close.
Once out of its sight, you take a short break, but soon a towering Hantu Gala emerges from the shadows, with its long, skeletal arms reaching out to you.
With no way of turning back, you run further into the heart of the park. Your heart is pounding – not from the running, because you’ve started to notice a scent of frangipani flowers, and the road ahead is through an orchard of banana trees.
Its glowing eyes and unnatural smile – it is the Pontianak, the most vengeful spirit.
You quicken your pace, dodging the ghostly apparitions that are starting to appear in your peripheral vision. But she just keeps reappearing.
Running deeper into the park, past broken fences, you discover that this is the place where unwanted items are left behind. These discarded objects, from broken mirrors to abandoned vehicles, became vessels for the supernatural.
As you walk past a decaying school bus, a mischievous Toyol lurking within jumps out.
You flinch and run away, noticing an old man emerging from the fog.
Is he the village elder, or the village shaman? He just laughs at you for your foolishness in stepping inside the hallowed grounds.
Broken mirrors scattered around a foggy clearing. It is said that shattered reflections are gateways to the spirit realm, and a portal for Hantu Cermin, the mirror ghost. This malevolent entity can appear from any reflective surface, its distorted form a harbinger of misfortune.
The immense evil festering in the jungle has allowed the Hantu Cermin to break out of the mirrors – her haunting replicas reappearing at every turn.
While paranormal activity intensifies, you find a lone woman crying below a tree. She wails, holding her baby, before suddenly lunging towards you.
Strange, ornate masks, remnants of dark rituals, hang from the branches of dead trees. The sight is both haunting and unsettling, as if the very trees themselves are imbued with a sinister power. As you draw closer, you can almost feel the darkness emanating from these artifacts. And then something started moving.
What appeared like a disembodied creature soars overhead. You realise it’s the Penanggal, and its eerie cries echoes through the night.
A sudden chilling laugh jolts you. It’s from an elderly woman who is unusually calm. She walks slowly towards you, clutching a weathered walking stick. Her lips curling into a wicked grin. Recognising your immense fear, she offers a chance to escape. “There is a price,” she cackles, as ground began to shake.
With a final glance at her, you rush through the new path that materialised, leaving behind the horrors of the jungle. What you owe will need to be paid back in due time.

Halloween Horror Nights – The Archives

One of the best haunted house was the Lost Kampung. The vibe was very scary and the ghost were very real. The scariest is the Pocong the full mummy wrapped ghost in white. I always heard people shared about their experiences with the real pocong but I was the scariest in the haunted house. The Pocong jumped to me. I screamed my heart loud.
