Overview and Thoughts
With a new home at New York zone, this year’s opening scaremony takes place at the largest stage ever built for the show. This 6-minute performance introduces the Undertaker as an icon, with elements of the Dead End scare zone. Of course, the show includes deadly transformations with much fancy pyrotechnics and stage effects.
I’m quite divided about this show. While I enjoy shorter openings, I felt that this show’s second scene, the funeral march, took way too long. Unless you are right in front, you’ll have to make do with a video feed showing them walking slowly for over a minute. Then everything else after happens so quickly. Before you knew it, all the icons have left the stage. The show also doesn’t quite explain the connection between the six other icons to the Undertaker or Dead End. The Undertaker’s ‘welcome’ line also felt very rushed, and pales in comparison to the voice of past years’ that had much presence and inherent drama.
This show also marks the retirement of Power Glove by Knife Party after a 5 year run, a song that was used for all Opening Scaremony shows from 2013: Sisters of Evil’s Teleportation, Minister of Evil takes flight, End of Days/ The Blood Moon, Rise of Lady Death, 7 Sinisters Gala Premiere and Infinite Fear. A new song, Ash by Demon Hunter, replaces Power Glove, and the iconic voice from past events was also replaced by the Undertaker’s.
Unlike the 2018 Infinite Fear show, this year’s opening scaremony is only performed once per event night. Right after the show, the stage quickly transitions into Death Fest mode.

A lone girl runs on stage, struggling to stay on her feet.
She eventually gets taken down by a thick flock of vultures.
The show then transits to her funeral.
We are gathered here today, not to mourn a loss
We are not here to weep, we are not here to say goodbye
We are here to celebrate a life of a beautiful young girl who brought joy to those around her
And now we can console ourselves in the knowledge that she has gone on to a better place
A swarm of vultures fly onto the stage, and it transforms into the Undertaker.
The Undertaker claims the soul of the girl, causing panic among those attending the funeral.
Fog swirl around the coffin. It bursts open, and in place of the girl, is Yumi, a vengeful doll that has cursed an entire village (Spirit Dolls haunted house).
Yumi viciously attacks, stabbing a man to death.
The Undertaker demands all mortals to kneel before him, and he summons this year’s icons to take their place.
After a dazzling sequence of stage effects, the icons appear, from left: Ring Leader Rusty (Twisted Clown University), Serpentine Spirit (Curse of the Naga), Executioner (Hell Block 9), Langsuir (The Chalet Hauntings), Savage (Death Fest), Yumi (Spirit Dolls).
Maniacs from Death Fest perform a quick takeover of the stage, transforming the zone into the killer death metal scare zone, Death Fest.
Opening Scaremony viewing experiences
Unless you have VIP viewing privileges via the RIP Experience, or early access via Stay and Scream, you will most likely find yourself in the middle of the crowds in New York when you enter the park from 7PM. This is even with making effort to sprint to New York from the turnstiles. Your view may be obstructed by props along the street.
You can catch the action from the large displays at the New York or Hollywood zones.
