The Realm of Yokai transports you into a Japanese-inspired underworld ruled by ancient folklore, in this scare zone at Universal Studios Singapore’s Halloween Horror Nights 13.

Overview and Thoughts

Japanese horror has long captivated global audiences, and Universal Studios Singapore actually had two Japanese-themed haunted houses in the past: Spirit Dolls (2019) and The Haunting of Oiwa (2018). While haunted houses often rely on jump scares, The Realm of Yokai offers a different experience – hauntingly beautiful sets within a deeply terrifying outdoor environment where you can’t really see where the spaces “end” – adding on to the fear factor and tension.

Taking place within the lush, dark forest of Jurassic Park, this zone also blends the serene Japanese garden aesthetics with the relentless dread of its ancient folklore, inviting guests to step directly into a world ruled by mischievous and malevolent spirits. Split into numerous smaller spaces, the zone features an eerie palette of lighting, soft, ghostly hues of blue and red cutting through the jungle darkness, and a soundscape with traditional instruments mixed with unsettling whispers and shrieks. The combination creates a foreboding, immersive atmosphere that makes the supernatural feel believable.

Your journey begins as you approach the towering Torii gate, traditionally signifies the entrance to a sacred space. At Halloween Horror Nights, the gate stand draped with tattered, decaying fabric, marking the spiritual boundary where you will leave the modern world behind as you step through.

Ancient spirits, the Yokai, begin to drift silently into view, their forms becoming clearer with every step.

The garden path leads you to a bridge over a tranquil pond.

As you quickly cross the bridge, you meet the first human in the realm. He warns you not to go further.

A hunched, amphibian form, possibly a Kappa, is lurking in the shadows just beyond, hidden among the moss-covered stones.

Another Yokai, wearing a huge round mask and wielding a stick, blocks your way. He grunts heavily, examines you, then moves his weapon and lets you pass.

You enter a narrow corridor flanked by fragile, delicate shoji doors. The paper screens become potential hiding places, concealing the unnerving movements and shadowy forms of the spirits lurking close by.

Screens burst to life as gruesome, mischievous ghosts pop out, their sudden appearance hitting you with a jolt of shock that freezes your steps.

The bloodstained walls finally open to another an abandoned garden, now disturbingly canopied by scores of tattered, half-closed umbrellas. Once elegant, these umbrellas are now draped with long, black hair that seems to stretch endlessly, swaying in a chilling, unseen breeze.

A woman dances before you, using a giant fan to conceal and reveal her true form.

Her performance is a deliberate trap, guiding you into the dark, twisted canopy and further ensnaring you in the web of hanging, endless hair.

As you desperately try to free yourself from the hair web, the terrifying Rokurokubi slides into view. Her impossibly long neck extends endlessly, bringing her pale, ghastly face closer and closer to yours.

You hear a tapping sound, which becomes closer and louder. It’s the Kasa Obake, or the umbrella ghost. Hopping menacingly on its single leg, it seems to be offering you a way out of the darkness.

But the playful demon is just toying with you, guiding you straight into a gruesome space where piled-up body parts signal a recent feast. The Yokai are now in plain sight, fully engaged in a hunt for fresh souls.

As you flee, watch out for the full range of terror: from the grotesque demons that shamble in your path to the deceptively beautiful, yet deadly women—all brought to ghastly, relentless life.

You find the demons gathered at a table, calmly enjoying an otherworldly supper. It’s a strangely peaceful yet chilling final sight. While your journey in their realm may have ended, the Yokai’s existence, and their hunger, will continue long into the night.
