Overview and Thoughts

Death Whisperer (known as Tee Yod in Thailand) has shattered multiple box office records for Thai cinema. The first film’s success was immediate, grossing over ฿500 million (approximately S$19 million), while the sequel went even further, becoming one of the highest-grossing Thai films of all time. This immense domestic success was mirrored by strong international reception, bringing Thai folklore and supernatural terror to a global audience.

The films, set in the 1970s and based on an allegedly true story, tell the harrowing tale of the ‘Y family’ in a rural village plagued by an evil spirit. The success of the film franchise (the third one just released) also culminated in the haunted house adaptation at HHN13. Now at Universal Studios Singapore, you can walk through spine-chilling moments from the first two films.

The set design immediately establishes authenticity, moving seamlessly from open fields to the claustrophobic spaces of traditional homes. The house masterfully utilizes sound design, employing unnerving silence punctuated by sudden, sharp noise to build anxiety. This focused reliance on atmosphere and a special two-level design makes the Death Whisperer experience a truly unique entry in the 2025 HHN lineup, and a truly terrifying tribute to Thai horror cinema.

Stepping through the ancient archway that frames the entrance, you immediately leave the park behind and are transported directly into rural Kanchanaburi in the 1970s.

After crossing the desolate farm fields, you arrive at the Y family home. Standing eerily outside is a traditional spirit house, with a clock, ominously frozen – its hands stuck at the thirteenth hour, setting the tone for the chilling journey ahead.

Stepping inside the house instantly feels like you’ve gone back in time. An old radio plays a nostalgic melody, a charming song of yesterday that is constantly interrupted by an eerie, static whisper. The scene is tense: Yak is right there, visibly troubled and desperately struggling to remain conscious.

Close by, Yam is completely consumed by a trance.

Yak shouts for the spirit to leave his home, and that makes you bolt into the next room.

The wicked village witch, Chuay, has broken into the house and brutally pinned Yam down. In a truly shocking and grotesque display, she pulls Yam’s tooth and swallows it.

With a terrifying shriek, she lunges toward you. You run to the other side, struggling instantly as the long bed nets block and tangle your path to escape.

You make your desperate exit, attempting to sneak away from the house, but are instantly met with horror: the Black Spirit pierces right through the window, having already claimed Yam as her host.

Making your way as far as you can, though the horrors of the forest. A hut lies ahead, could it be safe?

Sarge Paphan spots you and warns you to go no further.

The hut is crammed full of strange items and cursed objects. Inside, Chuay, now fully possessed, lets out a maniacal laugh, even with her head gruesomely impaled by a bamboo stake.

Slipping away from Chuay, you are suddenly pulled forward in time. You now stand on the edge of the notorious Dong Khomot forest as the sun sets. Beside you is Luechai, who is adamant about pushing deeper to hunt the ghoul that has plagued his family for generations.

Torches light the way forward into the dense forest, where dangers linger in the shadows.

Sem, the Sorcerer of Laplae, tries to guide you out, but the malicious entity is spreading rapidly.

The curse is too powerful, having consumed everyone in the group, including Khom.

You descend into the swamp, which consumes you with fog and eerie silence.

Through the swaying trees, you catch glimpses of movement in the shadows until Puang emerges, he was the Black Spirit’s long-time host.

His defense is useless now that he lost his charmed amulet.

Suddenly, the Black Spirit emerges from the trees. She’s here, and you are trapped.

Just as you run deeper into the woods, time slips violently. You suddenly emerge inside the Srisawang Hotel, arriving just in time for Yad’s wedding. A furious storm rages outside, delaying the guests.

Yet, while the invited are stuck, some truly terrifying, uninvited guests appear to have made it perfectly on time.

Chuay and the Black Spirit have trapped the Y family in a web of cruel hallucinations, intent on tearing them apart.

Armed with a powerful amulet from Puang, Yak makes his final stand against the Black Spirit – successfully vanquishing the ghoul, freeing his family from the torment that has haunted them for years…

The Black Spirit crumbles instantly into dust, dissolving into the air… but is she truly gone?
