Halloween Horror Nights 14 Mega Review by DEJIKI

Universal Studios Singapore’s Halloween Horror Nights 14 returns with an all-original line-up, after three straight years of IP collaborations. Here’s my full take on this year’s four haunted houses, two scare zones, three shows and Roaming Horror.

HHN14 marks a return to original storytelling, after three years of Netflix and music IP collaborations. It puts Singapore back on the world map for originality, though the event feels a touch less tied to Universal itself. HamiKuma is the only “IP” this year, making his Singapore debut the one moment HHN14 feels distinctly Universal, and one of the more exciting additions of the season.

The four haunted houses anchor the event, each with its own strengths. The two locally themed houses are the clear darlings: Singapore’s Most Haunted: ON AIR pulls off a rare “houses within a house” experience, while Karang Guni: The Cursed Collection impresses with the sheer, visceral detail of its thousands of props from the heartlands, a flavour that carries into The Raveyard too, where local ghosts linger through the zone. Chatterbox Charlie’s Vaudeville Horrors and Made in Hell: XL Robotics round out the houses with carnival dread and sci-fi horror. The three shows hold their own just as well: Nail the Beat brings HamiKuma’s infectious outdoor energy over from Universal Studios Japan, Club PanDEMONium keeps Pantages Hollywood Theater’s track record going, and Scaremony returns after a two-year absence.

It’s hard to shake the feeling that this year’s event has shrunk in footprint. Jurassic Park and Waterworld are both out of the picture, and the projection mapping that once lit up Far Far Away castle has moved to Ancient Egypt. Roughly half the park feels untouched by HHN, with Roaming Horror only filling that gap in brief moments, and even the scare zone streets feel sparse, though that could be an early sign of the park leaning more on performer-led encounters than massive scenic builds, the way some of Universal’s other parks do. What the footprint lost, the haunted houses more than made up for. The set design inside all four is some of the most impressive I’ve seen at this event, dense, detailed, and worth going through more than once just to catch everything.

HHN14 Haunted Houses review

Karang Guni: The Cursed Collection

Singapore’s rag-and-bone man has spent years collecting unwanted items, unaware that each one carried the ill fortune of its previous owner. Those curses have turned him into a vessel for all of them, and his cluttered shophouse is where new victims are lured.

Inside, around 1,125 props fill the space, from broken altars and cracked mirrors to abandoned dolls and ritual objects.

The house opens deceptively quiet: cluttered rooms that could pass for any rag-and-bone man’s haul, until surreal scenes pull back the curtain to reveal the nightmarish realms within.

One room, distinctly Chinese in its altar and ritual dressing, stages one of the house’s best choreographed scares. Past this point, the house shifts into an eerie green glow, a nod to the curse’s reach widens well beyond its vessels.

Dolls, what look like preserved fetuses and body parts, jars with things still moving inside them, and a junkyard that turns out to be anything but lifeless.

Eagle-eyed HHN veterans should keep watch too for callbacks to past HHN events among the Karang Guni’s collection of cursed curios.

The humble Karang Guni makes up for it in atmosphere and craft. Dense, deliberate, and genuinely unsettling once the curse takes hold, it is one of this year’s strongest houses.

Singapore’s Most Haunted: ON AIR

Singapore’s Most Haunted returns for a third year, following The Killings (2024) and Build to Horror (2025). This time, the setting is the abandoned broadcast studio, which shut down overnight. Trapped inside, everyone is forced to reenact Singapore’s darkest legends on a loop, feeding the strength of the TV Ghost.

This is where Diana Saw was killed on air. A doomed crew member shoves a lighting rig at guests while the killing replays.

Studio four recreates a darker story: students taking revenge on an abusive teacher.

The third studio brings you to the Istana Mati murder story, set within a luxurious white house. Fun fact from Ryan Wilson at the press conference: Istana Mati is inspired by the real-life Matilda House. What follows it is arguably my favourite part of the house, a transition into what felt like genuinely stepping outside (despite going “into a studio”), complete with the actual Yellow Tower.

This is a nod to the Amber Beacon Tower murder case.

Watch out for a gangster figure in this retelling, implicated in the Amber Beacon Tower case just as much as the killer himself.

A short between-sets passage leads into Devil’s Bend, a car crash scene with a staged stunt, before the house pulls guests back inside.

The final room is the standout. Guests pass under a row of security cameras before entering a space filled with eyes on every screen, including one showing footage from moments earlier: guests watching themselves become part of the story, feeding the TV Ghost and reinforcing the cursed loop of doom. It’s a clever way to end the house.

Between the Matilda House and Amber Beacon nods, the indoor-outdoor sleight of hand, and a finale that puts guests on screen, ON AIR continues to be one of HHN’s most inventive local houses.

Made in Hell: XL Robotics

Set inside Soundstage 28, Made in Hell: XL Robotics imagines a bioengineering and robotics facility that harvests human lifeforce to sell artificial immortality to the billionaire elite.

You arrive mid-assault, as rebels attack to free their captured leader, Big Brother Hong, and end up caught between rebels, robots and the victims of the programme.

Past the harvesting and nursery facility, the story escalates fast. An operating theatre stages guests being worked on in pursuit of artificial immortality, complete with jump scares, before a biohazard room forces guests to push through body bags of abandoned test subjects.

The house then builds to its finale: a CEO showdown with Big Brother Hong, staged in a room lit with glowing wires, where the CEO extracts his life force on stage, his nemesis left levitating through the effects.

This house is brightly lit throughout and never really goes for outright scares, but what it lacks in horror it makes up for in spectacle, a captivating, cinematic experience from start to finish. Sci-fi horror done with real conviction, XL Robotics builds steadily to a finale that’s genuinely one of the event’s most striking set pieces.

Chatterbox Charlie’s Vaudeville Horrors

Chatterbox Charlie was one of last year’s fan favourites in The FEARground, and this year he has a house of his own. Charlie and his dummy Junior have become one mind, and the house is fuelled by revenge for a silenced childhood. Their victims have been turned into gruesome versions of themselves.

Small in footprint but immersive in execution, the house opens among Charlie’s sideshow collections before returning FEARground favourites, including the circus barker, resurface throughout.

Eerie carnival music fills the air throughout the rooms, while the sideshows are elaborately dressed, all bringing a visceral yet frightening fairground experience.

Junior, Charlie’s smaller puppet companion, makes repeat appearances along the way.

The house builds to its most memorable moment: a dream, or nightmare, of a journey walking through Charlie’s own giant mouth, staged so guests feel literally consumed by him, before a finale room filled with puppets on strings drives home the sense that everyone inside has become another one of his playthings.

Short, but dense with tricks and detail, Chatterbox Charlie’s makes the most of a compact space. Where Karang Guni and ON AIR lean into local folklore, this house goes the other way entirely, an old-world carnival horror that would feel at home in any Halloween Horror Nights around the world.

HHN14 Scare Zones review

The Raveyard

The forgotten graveyard in New York has become a neon rave, and its residents rise from different eras to finish a party that death cut short.

The Raveyard trades the generic graveyard look for something more local, Asian-flavoured ghosts and residents that make this year’s zone feel distinctly Singaporean, “rojak” rave energy and all.

It’s a cast that feels plucked from a Singapore heartland rather than a horror movie, though the streets themselves can feel a little bare between encounters, so timing your visit around when the cast is out is worth it.

Necropolis: The Serpent’s Crossroads

Just past The Raveyard, Ancient Egypt hosts a liminal crossroads where bargains are struck with ancient gods and souls are traded.

A few minutes was all preview night allowed here, but even a brief pass through Necropolis turned up plenty: the Snake Wraith, stilt performers, Soul Stealers carrying orbs, and the giant spider making a return from HHN12’s Dark Dreams show. More on Sasu Soul Eater, the zone’s ruling figure, soon.

HHN14 Shows and Special Experience review

Scaremony opening show in Hollywood

Scaremony returns in the signature Singapore format, and uses every second of it well. Four streamers break into a warehouse to film content, only to discover objects tying directly into this year’s houses, a chest of puppets, a case bearing the XL Robotics logo, an ON AIR sign, all inside a warehouse connected to the Karang Guni himself. The show ties together HHN14’s entire line-up before the night even properly begins.

One streamer can’t resist. She tears the talisman off the cursed chest, sealing her own fate the moment it comes loose.

The chest pulls her into a backrooms-style space, where the Karang Guni is waiting. She’s transformed on the spot into something like a grotesque dancing ballerina music box figure, the curse now fully unleashed.

From there, the chest reveals the HHN14 icons: KHAOS, Chatterbox Charlie, the CEO, and finally the TV Ghost, with Karang Guni himself having already been lurking on the upper level, claiming his own victim much earlier on.

Nail the Beat show in The Raveyard scare zone

The Ravers of the Raveyard take the stage first, warming up the crowd and teaching the audience the moves of THRILLSEEKER (HHN14’s dance anthem) before the real show even begins.

HamiKuma then makes his grand appearance with his Scare Bears troupe, and the energy he brings to the stage is infectious.

His dancing doesn’t go unnoticed either, it stirs something in the graveyard below, summoning the real Pontianak, drawn out by all the commotion.

She takes one look at HamiKuma and decides she wants in on his look. What follows is her transformation: Ponti-Ana is unveiled, and she takes the stage alongside the Fatimah Rockers as her own dancers.

From there it builds into a full dance showdown, HamiKuma and Ponti-Ana going toe to toe, before the whole cast comes together for one last number, dancers and crowd all dancing as one across the Raveyard.

A genuinely joyful showdown, well-choreographed and a strong fit for the Raveyard’s party atmosphere.

Every beat of this show draws the living a little closer to Ponti-Ana’s curse, and it’s worth catching for HamiKuma alone: this marks his first appearance at Universal Studios Singapore, having previously only haunted Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Japan as their resident zombie teddy bear, joined here by the Fatimah Rockers and the Scare Bears.

Club PanDEMONium show in Pantages Hollywood Theater

Club PanDEMONium is Hell’s hottest club at Pantages Hollywood Theater this year as the signature stage show.

The French-accented KHAOS runs Club PanDEMONium as a cabaret built to tempt guests into the seven deadly sins, and this show is noticeably more adult than typical.

The motto here is Sin, Scream, Repeat. So each sin is given its own unique airtime, and there are two standout solos – first to the Prince of Pride.

The hottest act goes to Lady Lust and her Sinister Sweethearts, styled to simulate burlesque.

One of the most memorable segments is Gluttony, which folds in the Hungry Ghost Festival tradition of burning offerings, paper effigies included, into a can-can routine. It’s a distinctly Singaporean twist on a classic cabaret trope – just clever!

Envy takes the stage as the “Sinful Serenade,” a woman perpetually stuck as the bridesmaid and never the bride, and her number turns that frustration into a full performance.

The segment builds to its own twisted wedding: a “blushing bride” descends from the ceiling and is wed on the spot to a randomly picked guest, Envy getting her ceremony after all, just not quite the one she wanted.

I’d say it again – Club PanDEMONium is a confident, more mature show than Pantages has offered in years, with the Pride, Gluttony and Envy segments the key highlights.

Roaming Horror Special Experience

Roaming Horror takes the scares out of the zones and into the walkways of the park. Karang Guni and the Pontianak-inspired Fatimah Rockers prowl the park and strike without warning.

On preview night, the Fatimah Rockers turned up at Far Far Away, near the gate leading into Jurassic Park, performing the on-the-hour THRILLSEEKER dance around 10pm. Karang Guni was also prowling the streets with his cargo trailer, capturing victims for his cursed collection.
