Overview and Thoughts

Just like the story it’s based on, this house presents a fascinating duality: it can either be full of thrilling surprises or just downright confusing. Nonetheless, it’s visually interesting, very unusual – because you probably have no idea what everything is supposed to look like.

The challenge starts with its source material, the IP 道诡异仙 (Dào Guǐ Yì Xiān), or Dao of the Bizarre Immortal, which is not widely known locally. So this IP mainly targets new audiences from overseas, primarily from China, where the novel is very popular. This makes its complete absence at Universal Studios Beijing’s Scares @ Universal event even more puzzling, considering the potential cross-promotion opportunities within China.

Design-wise, the house delivered a strong start, but the quality felt drastically uneven after the Alchemy chamber. The rooms are more spacious than in previous years, which created new scare opportunities. They also suffered from feeling excessively boxy, lacking the thoughtful, layered theming required to construct truly immersive spaces, especially when compared to last year’s high design standard. The flat walls with printed environments is a sudden shift that pulled me out of Horror Nights and into an escape room. Consequently, the final few rooms missed the mark in creating a satisfying end.

The location for this house is also puzzling. It was built in Soundstage 28, yet unlike its recent predecessors there (DIYU: Descent Into Hell and Cursed Scrolls: Dynasty of Darkness), the house lacked significant scale, particularly in vertical sets. The entire experience felt constrained in height and could have potentially been constructed at any smaller location. Ironically, some of the other houses, despite having tighter physical constraints, featured much taller and more complex vertical sets, even incorporating a second floor.

As Horror Nights is often dominated by familiar horror tropes, The Unruly Immortals is a burst of fresh and unusual energy. It bravely pulls from niche Asian mythology and delivers a visually chaotic experience, introducing mental and mythological madness – a fantastic addition that elevates the overall diversity of the HHN13 haunted house line-up.

Note: The next part of the article is my own interpretation of The Unruly Immortals haunted house, which may not be accurate given that the whole house felt like a hallucination, and I had only gone through an small portion of the source content plus some additional research on the side.

The Unruly Immortals begins with a vivid chamber of eyes and blood. Before you fully grasp the horrors ahead, a lone, scribbled message warns: it is all an illusion.

Your journey starts seemingly in the modern world, at the doorstep of the White Pagoda Hospital. Yet, something is immediately wrong. That tree, over there, are those… hanging heads? Or was it a hallucination?

The chaos has already begun to bleed into reality. As you step inside the hospital, distorted posters seem to taunt you rather than ease your fears.

A desperate man approaches, struggling visibly from his nightmares. This is Li Huowang, his mind perilously shifting between dimensions.

Distorted hospital staff arrive to take him away. It’s time for… treatment.

But the surgery room they lead him to is clearly a new place for unspeakable horrors.

You rush out through another door and walk directly into a hallway of mirrors. A young child’s haunting laughter rings out, deliberately luring you deeper into this inescapable labyrinth.

Finally, she appears again, gleeful at the realization that you have strayed too far to ever return.

You encounter Li Huowang again, but this time, you’ve landed inside an ancient chamber, where the constant, ominous ringing of chains signals a ritual already in process.

This is where medicinal pills are being cultivated – pills made from humans, consumed in a desperate, gruesome bid to achieve immortality.

The terrifying question hangs in the air: Are these truly elixirs of life, or twisted medicine conjuring only madness?

A burning path leads you forward, but the darkness is punctuated by glowing hearts beating ominously, while monsters launch sudden attacks from the shadows.

You find yourself walking directly into the Ghost Stage.

It’s a tavern-like space, with people seemingly in a trance – or did you hallucinate again?

You walk past them and the veils, going closer to the stage.

There, you find Bai Lingmiao, seemingly possessed in a twisted wedding ceremony.

Escaping the wedding chaos, you find yourself immediately shrouded in a misty crypt. But the brief moment of quiet is shattered as the undertaker and restless spirits break free from their graves. Even a writhing centipede lion dancer abruptly jumps out from a dark corner.

he path forward flashes, and this time you land in a demented gambling den, where deadly games are played out in this nightmarish parlour.

You narrowly escape the massive game tiles, quickly approaching the ominous Maozhimeng (牦之门).

Stepping through, you enter an entirely new realm that reveals the dark, true nature of its existence. Strange figures with a malevolent and bizarre aura surround you, warping the chaotic world further into a true nightmare.

At the Gate’s edge, you see Danyangzi facing down Li Huowang for a final confrontation.

As blinding lights sear and giant eyes float unsettlingly in space, you find Li Huowang alone, simply laughing.
