Stranger Things haunted house at Halloween Horror Nights 13 – A cinematic journey to Hawkins and the Upside Down

Overview and Thoughts

The original Stranger Things (2018) haunted house marked Universal Studios Singapore’s first major IP haunted house – and that was also the first time that three Universal parks adapted Netflix’s IP.

This year, the Stranger Things haunted house returns, not as a rehash, but as an ambitious journey through Seasons 2 to 4 of the beloved Netflix series. It’s a bold vision to bring so much iconic content to life, aiming to immerse fans deeper than ever before into the supernatural threats lurking beneath Hawkins.

Taking place at the same Breezeway site many years ago, Singapore’s 2025 Stranger Things house can be roughly divided into 12 scenes:

1. Welcome (back) to Hawkins
2. Eleven’s Escape to Upside Down
3. Will Byers in the bathroom
4. Byers’ Living Room
5. Outside Byers’ House
6. The Tunnels
7. Hawkins Lab
8. Sealing the Gate
9. Brimborn SteelWorks
10. Battle of Starcourt
11. Vecna’s Mind Lair
12. Creel House Attic

That’s certainly a lot of content to cover, and it’s amazing how so many scenes were packed into a relatively tiny venue. There was hardly any space for typical transition corridors; in fact, these were cleverly designed to be masked as themed spaces between the larger rooms. The creativity in maximising this footprint is impressive, but you can sense the constraints.

If only the creative team had access to a larger (or taller) venue, like Soundstage 28, or were able to build a mega-sized house combining two venues, we might truly see their ambitious vision for this attraction come to full life!

The iconic Stranger Things titles glow with an eerie red light. Tendrils snake out of the wall, pulsing and forming a direct portal. It beckons you into the heart of Hawkins.

Stepping through – you land right into where the story ended the last time – back to the gloomy Upside Down, where Eleven quickly hides from agents searching for her from the other side.

The next scene brings you back into the real world. You peer into the bathroom as Will Byers struggles, coughing up the tendril that binds him to the Mind Flayer.

The room suddenly flashes, and for a brief moment, you’ve phased into the Upside Down.

You quickly exit the bathroom and find yourself in the Byers’ Living Room. Through a nearby window, the massive Mind Flayer is visibly emerging, its shadowy form swirling within a windy, clouded atmosphere.

As Joyce Byers desperately tries to get in touch with Hopper, you are surrounded by Will’s sketches. These drawings, when pieced together, map out the immense, web-like tunnel system that has burrowed right beneath Hawkins.

Outside, Jonathan Byers watches in horror as the gigantic Mind Flayer slowly makes its devastating approach towards his house.

Your journey continues into the dark, underground tunnels. Demodogs and frantic lab works are on the attack.

You need to find your way out, and fast!

The tunnel leads you into the chaotic, destroyed rooms of Hawkins National Laboratory.

In a tense moment, you catch a glimpse of Hopper as he tries to fend off demodogs.

He soon reappears moments later with Eleven, desperately attempting to close the massive Gate before it’s too late.

Time skips forward, and you find yourself at Brimborn Steelworks.

This is where the Mind Flayer lurked, as it turned human victims into The Flayed.

As you move through the seemingly dormant crowd of The Flayed, several suddenly jolt to life, their bodies flinching and their voices rising – in desperate pleas to be freed.

You burst into the main atrium of Starcourt Mall, only find yourself under the looming Mind Flayer.

Through the chaos, you find Billy Hargrove trapped under rubble. He screams for help, then heroically urges you to run, as he makes the ultimate sacrifice to distract the gargantuan monster.

Breaking free of the destruction, you enter Vecna’s Mind Lair, a surreal, blood-red dimension. Everything seems to be disintegrating and floating through the air, while a clock tolls ominously in the background.

You see Max desperately trapped beside the Creel House door, yet it offers no escape from Vecna’s control, as tendrils emerge from everywhere, tightening its grip in this nightmareish world.

You narrowly escape Vecna’s reach only to be thrown into a time slip. For an instant, Henry Creel phases through the wall.

You reappear inside the terrifying attic of Creel House. This is the spot where Vecna is bound to the phsyical world, surrounding by tendrils connecting him directly to the Upside Down.

An unstable cursed gate has also ripped through the attic. This is where Jason met his gruesome end, dismembered by the catastrophic tear between worlds.

The gate rapidly expands, relentlessly destroying the attic as it starts to cave in. You must find the only path forward, but now that the gates have torn through reality, can you ever escape Vecna’s grasp?

The story of Stranger Things will conclude in Season 5, releasing on Netflix in three phases: 4 episodes on 26 November, 3 episodes on 25 December, and the series Finale on 31 December.
