Overview and Thoughts

Out of all the haunted houses at HHN12, this is the most mysterious, and frankly, the scariest. Mostly because there are so many dark spaces and the designers had crafted several unexpected scares.

This is inspired by the infamous Red House in Loyang, Pasir Ris. The park’s creative team however, said that it isn’t exactly based on a single story. Different tales appear to be told in every room, and the only common connection is the house, with a shadowy entity only revealed towards the end.

The real house had a storied past, with incidents allegedly leading to its haunted reputation, including the building being used as a school and shelter for children and school before it was burned down in the 1940s, which explains some of the burned rooms. The other story is about a man who killed his wife and children before hanging himself at the tree outside, which is also adapted in this haunted house.

As you walk inside this haunted house, it’s up to you to piece together clues as you endure the creepy atmosphere within, crafting your own theories on what happened, and make that your story.

This haunted house is also set up at the usual space for locally-themed haunts, known for occasional unexplained, supernatural activity. My advice is not to think too much, don’t freak out, and just scream when it happens.

After lighting an incense offering to the stone lions, their eyes glow menacingly. The howling paused for a moment, and the old red metal gates slowly swing open.

They have permitted you to enter the forsaken building, but your time inside is limited.

Once inside, you discover that some people have staked out inside this infamous red house. There is a board trying to string together all the details. Someone has also tried to document the hauntings within – with video equipment everywhere.

The camera appears to be pointing at an old rocking chair, seemingly to capture paranormal activity. One of the TV suddenly flickers.

Though the static, you could see a shadowy figure with long hair coming into view, very faintly.

That same shadowy figure suddenly appears beside you, making you run out and into a derelict hallway.

It’s clear that the house was visited and vandalised by thrill-seekers. Perhaps during the day when it’s safer, or are they still here? One wall carried an ominous message.

The vandal is lurking between the walls, but something isn’t quite right.

Shocked by his grotesque appearance, you bolted in the other direction. That couldn’t be a real person.

Suddenly, you realise that there are others lurking in the corridors, and you can’t go back the way you came.

The art appears to move and taunt you to explore deeper within. As you walk further, you realise that the corridors are slowly bending, and the graffitied walls are slowly cracking and peeling away, revealing an opening to another room. It looks totally different, almost like stepping back into another time.

Spirits have started to materialise, and they quietly observe as walk in this strange environment. You notice that the old grandfather clock is running backwards.

The next room, appears to be a dining room, but it is floating in the air – another man glares at you.

He suddenly snaps forward, making you rush into the next room.

The house appears to be burning, and the charred hallway brings you to another time.

A lone student begs you to help her escape. Her teacher is nearby, but hostile. She chases you around the burned and destroyed hallways of what seemed like a school, before suddenly vanishing into the shadows.

You stumble into another room – this time, it is a stormy night. A man stands up, with bloodstained clothes, and you soon discover that he might be a murderer.

And the beheaded victim is also in the room.

Shocked by the gruesome sight, you run out of the room to find yourself outdoors. A boy appears to be lost, and looking for his father. Was it the man you saw just now?

You notice a noose is hanging off from the big tree.

The spirits lead you back into the house, and you find yourself in a nursery filled with dolls.

Only to discover what’s more unsettling – the dolls are starting to move. One of them jumps on you.

You try to pull the dolls away, and end up going deeper into a dark tunnel – where it seems like the dead are buried. Green hands also start emerging from the walls, as if some spirits are trying to claw their way out.

Through the darkness, a large gap between the walls reveal a gigantic evil spirit that appears to be gazing right into you. There’s no time to think but to find the nearest exit out of this nightmare.
