Universal Studios Singapore officially unveiled Halloween Horror Nights 4 with a dramatic inauguration ceremony for The Minister of Evil. With an elaborate backstory and publicity campaign, this year’s iconic character Jonah Goodwill has emerged as the new paragon of horror, bringing Singapore’s biggest Halloween event to the next level.

Pantage’s Hollywood Theatre – specially dressed for the occasion.
Everyone gathered at the foyer of the theatre to await for the Minister’s arrival.
Chirpy Emcee who chatted briefly with us, before she going on stage to welcome the Minister.
◂ Jonah Goodwill arrives ▸
Jonah Goodwill was completely stoic, posing majestically – in silence – with guests attending the inauguration ceremony.
◂ The Inauguration Ceremony ▸
With all attendees seated, the ceremony quickly began with a primer on the Minister’s initiatives for the past four years, which includes a World energy initiative and Nuclear disarmament.
“2013: A very big year for everyone. For the first time in history, the world came together to elect its first world leader. Jonah Goodwill was easily leading the pack in the first two quarters of elections.”
“The second half of the year saw an uprising of protesters and politicians, with strikes and petty crimes against local peace unions. Minister Goodwill gathered the first troops of the Borderless Brothers Army…”
“2014: An even more tumultuous year. However, in its all uncertainty, the world has never been more ready to band together.”
“And ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming on stage – the man of the moment – Minister Jonah Goodwill!”
The video switches to a feed showing the Minister walking down a corridor.
But something does not feel right…
Minister Goodwill stands in the shadows.
The host invited questions from the audience, which started off with some positive, congratulatory remarks for the Minister.
“Minister Goodwill! How does it feel to be a leader of the common world?”
It soon appears that protesters have crashed the Minister’s inauguration ceremony. A few members of the audience started to question the Minister’s plans. And someone started exclaiming that the Minister is an imposter.
“What are your responses to allegations of a covert military mission of world dominance by violent means?”
“Sir, what is your take on Gregory Simon’s report this morning? That the common world is a short-lived vision?”
Sir, do not interrupt!!
“HE’S AN IMPOSTER YOU FOOLS! There is no common world!!”
“SECURITY!! SECURITY! We need somebody here!”
While security is busy handling one loud protester, suddenly a man runs up stage. Just as he was about to throw his weapon…
The Minister deflects it and sets the man ablaze – quickly followed with a few explosions.
With the assailant subdued, and staff running away from the violence, Minister Jonah Goodwill finally emerged from the shadows, unveiling the true face of Evil.
◂ A most dramatic Ceremony – captured on video! ▸
It couldn’t be more perfect, to reveal our dear Minister of Evil with such explosive drama. I love it.
◂ Jonah Goodwill – The Story ▸
Jason Ramsburg (Creative Director) and Scott D. Peterson (Senior Producer) took the stage and introduced the concepts of HHN4, including Jonah Goodwill’s story.
Ramsburg: “You can go see theatre – but where can you experience theatre all around you? That’s Halloween Horror Nights.”
“We tried to create theatrical movie-type plots to transport guests into a story. We needed a character that emcompasses the whole thing. So we thought, why not have a government leader?”
“He was elected into public office in the future – when the entire world has united. We’re looking for one united leader to lead us. Unfortunately, when we are happy that he got elected to office… And then – and only then – he finally revealed that he’s a demon from hell. How bad would that be? So now we are living in a world with a demon leading the world.”
Ramsburg revealed that the dramatic “Scaremony” will return in 2014, and that it will be “a few times more dramatic” than what we saw during the Inauguration Ceremony. Check out last year’s Sisters of Evil Scaremony here!
The duo then unveiled what the park’s creative team has orchestrated for HHN4, starting with scare zone concepts.
◂ HHN4 – The Scare Zones ▸
Scare zones are themed areas in the park. These are interactive experiences that extends almost all street areas and is always “happening” throughout the night.
Demoncracy
The Minister of Evil’s domain of terror: A city in ruins and overrun with demons. The New York zone will be split with a giant crack across the street, boiling with fury. Expect aerial scare actors and special effects. There will also be a dramatic show on the street happening “randomly” throughout the night, which Peterson teases – it will be “amazing”.
Bogeyman
Taking place in Sting Alley, the Bogeyman has teamed with up devilish children to haunt in the dark alleys of Water Street. Beware of the damned adults and kids, who will even prey on the brave.
Peterson: “Be prepared to be scared to death here. Sting Alley is very similar to a Haunted House.”
Canyon of the Cursed
Egypt transports guests into a Frontier town in Texas, 1864. Undead zombies, horses, American Indians wage war across town. This is a new concept that the park promises will be unlike past years’ scare zones in the Egypt area.
Scary Tales
At night, the jungle of Jurassic Park transforms into an evil forest, where fairy tales always end badly. All the stories that we are familiar with have been twisted in these misty woods. Imagine Red Riding Hood, not as a prey, but a cruel huntress.
Ramsburg: “Imagine Rapunzel, without her lovely hair. She’s upset and freaking out about that.”
◂ HHN4 – The Haunted Houses ▸
Haunted Houses are walkthrough experiences built in an enclosed area. Guests would need to queue for their turn to enter the houses.
The L.A.B – Laboratory of Alien Breeding
An alien-themed haunted house where experiments are underway – attempting to create perfect human-alien hybrid species. The L.A.B will be housed at the Waterworld queue (same venue as Possessions last year).
Ramsburg: “You’re going to see humans with alien heads; aliens with human bodies. It’s going to be really weird.”
MATI Camp
A military torture camp, with scenes inspired by local military legends. Jonah Goodwill, Minister of Evil has put an evil Sergeant Major in charge. Be prepared to see recruits suffering – Hanging, being tortured, and even gruesome depictions of forced cannibalism.
Mati means “Death” in Malay. This house will be built beside Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure (same venue as Songs of Death).
Peterson: “I can relate to this particular house. A lot of NS (National Service) ghost stories will be put into this house.”
Jing’s Revenge
This house revolves around Jing – a girl who, tormented by classmates, committed suicide in school. Her ghost returned to haunt the classrooms. USS will recreate eerie environment of pre-war schools and old mission schools. Different forms of Jing will reappear to terrify guests.
Jing’s school will be built at a backstage area behind the street of New York.
Ramsburg: “We try to inject the latest theatrical technology. There will be a blackboard in the haunted house that writes itself.”
Jack’s 3D Dementia
Ramsburg: “Pay attention people, this is interesting.”
Unlike the other three haunted houses which are dark and creepy, Jack’s 3D Dementia will be bright and colourful. This is the park’s first attempt in a “3D” maze, where 3D glasses will work with Chromadepth 3D paintings. Some visuals will seem to “jump” out of the walls. Jack’s twisted world will take place within Stage 29, where Adrift took place last year.
Ramsburg: “The character of Jack comes to us from Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights. He’s a serial killer clown; a loony wacky guy. Clowns are scary – this house is going to be really cool. It’s bright and very interesting.”
◂ HHN4 – Stage Show ▸
Jack’s Nightmare Circus
Extending from Jack’s 3D Dementia, Jack will also have its own show at Pantage’s Hollywood Theatre. Guests will be able to meet Jack and witness how he forces “potential auditionees” into crazy acts and torture. Gordo Gamsby – renowned sideshow star for all things weird, will be one of the acts here.
◂ HHN4 – Park Map ▸
This park map shows where HHN4 scare zones and haunted houses will be built. Similar locations as last year, but one Haunted House – Jing’s Revenge – will be built at a new backstage area at New York (next to Transformers show building).

Are you prepared for HHN4?
Honestly, I am very impressed by this year’s concepts, and of course, the iconic character Jonah Goodwill, which is Singapore’s exclusive character with most presence so far.
The only thing I wish HHN4 will have? A Frequent Fear Ultimate Pass, for all 13 nights worth of terror (just for me). Haha.
What do you think of this year’s themes and Minister Jonah Goodwill? Do you feel that the park has raised the bar once again, with more elaborate haunted houses and scare zones? Share your thoughts in the comments!

The man was being set ablaze… Is he still ok after that ceremony? Just hope that he is unhurt!
(I mean the actor who is being set ablaze)
I’m sure the park is very diligent on the safety of their performers! Shortly after the pyrotechnics were set off, crew came in to extinguish the flames and help the actor to backstage.
Ah ok! Thanks! Glad to hear that! 😀
Looks pretty real though after watching the video! 😀
Usually when pyrotechnics are used on an actor, they wear flame retardant undergarments underneath what they are wearing and cover their bodies in a salve. If they aren’t close to the audience, they could even have a substance on their bodies too. I know this because Universal Orlando does something very similar in their 8th Voyage of Sinbad show, when the evil witch is set on fire and jumps into the abyss.
Thanks for sharing that! 😀
While the actor is on flames, how painful was that? Do they feel the pain or something while on flames? Just curious.
No, they don’t feel anything painful, they just feel the heat, but they have to get it off really fast. There’s a small amount of time they can keep it on before it burns off all the flame retardant and possibly harm them.
Alright. Thanks for sharing this info. Well glad that he is still safe! 😀
Hi Dejiki, if we buy a 1-day ticket to HHN, do you think we can view all the haunted houses (or at least 3/4 of the haunted zones?
It really depends on how crowded the park is – something that we can’t always predict. For HHN2 and HHN3, it’s possible to experience all 3 Haunted Houses if one arrives at the park early and stays until it closes. If you skip the rides, it will be even easier.
Thanks! By the way, can’t wait for your park survival guide before I go for HHN4.
Any idea what will happen if it rains? Are the scare zones and haunted houses sheltered?
When it rains at the park, some scare zones may be temporarily suspended (scare actors will leave and return backstage) but guests can still walk around. Haunted Houses are almost entirely enclosed, so they can continue to be open. It’s always good to bring a foldable umbrella along, because the queues and exits of Haunted Houses are not completely sheltered.
Any news on the RIP Tour price? Been going on it for the previous 2 years and I would like to try that again.
Hi Jeremiah,
HHN4 R.I.P Tours is currently priced at a discounted rate of $158 per person. After the Early Bird promotion, the Tour will cost $198 per person.
This looks amazing. I can’t wait to check out Scary Tales. Also wanna meet Jonah Goodwill!
Any idea if Monster Rock- Halloween Edition is returning?
I wish they could bring out the Universal Monsters (Dracula, the Frankensteins, Phantom of the Opera, etc.) for meet and greets during the event.
Hi J,
This year the park will be staging Jack’s Nightmare Circus at Pantages Hollywood Theatre. All variants of Monster Rock will be retiring after August this year.
Do you mean for the halloween event only or is Monster Rock retiring for good?
Monster Rock will end its run on 31 August 2014. For more information, refer to this post: http://dejiki.com/2014/07/uss-update-2014jul/#mr
That’s good to hear. Monster Rock has ran it’s course.
This year’s theme looks absolutely amazing!! Too bad I have no one to come with me. Dejiki, will you be meeting your readers and we all tour together?
If there are more readers would like to tour together, I guess we could all meet up.
how much will it cost for a person to try all stages
Hello Dejiki,
I’m wondering if the General Admission includes the rides in the park, for example The Revenge of The Mummy?
Hi Sandra,
HHN4 Admission includes select rides and shows in the parks that are open during the event hours (7:30pm-1:30am). Revenge of The Mummy is one of them.
Looking forward to this one, especially when the second last night falls on Halloween itself (that’s when I’m planning to get in from KL). Better get round to organising tickets.
