Led by the Daughter of the Undead, vampires have drained Whittemore of its life, turning a once beautiful town into a cemetery. Can you survive the Attack of the Vampires?
WARNING: DISTURBING IMAGERY
This entry includes potentially disturbing photos of scenes from the Attack of the Vampires Scare Zone. Viewer discretion is advised.
About this Scare Zone
Attack of the Vampires is a first “non-modern” scare zone at New York City, and is perhaps the most “interactive” concept so far. Essentially, the Whittemore Graveyard forms the main scare zone. Doused in gloomy red and blue lighting, as well as thick fog, this area is packed with scare actors. They are divided into two “factions”: The hunters (vampires, werewolf, etc) and the hunted (victims, with wound on their necks).
There are some cool “events” in this scare zone that are easily missed: First is the “Birth of the Vampire”, a short performance at the steps of New York Library (scroll down for photos) and the other would be the dramatic “cast change” moment – a loud bell would sound off, and (projections of) bats would swarm around the New York Library. The cast taking over would then march out of the New York Library, while the existing performers discreetly fade into the shadows. There might even be a surprise… in the air, so look out for that!
This entry has a lot of photos and two videos! One of them is a general walkthrough of the 5th Avenue section, while the other focuses on the quieter Water Street (Sting Alley).
Whittemore Cemetery
Welcome to Whittemore Cemetery. If you are at the park early and most people ran into Adrift, you would have a wonderful window of opportunity to take photos of, and with, the vampires and residents of Whittemore.
The “victims” are unable to scare. They are either dazed, exhausted or crying for help – hysterically.
Don’t miss the magnificent stone Gargoyles in the Cemetery – they are quite… alive.
The back end of Whittemore Cemetery is more open – this is where some “special” characters roam, such as the stilt-walking vampires and the elusive werewolf.
Now then, watch the walkthrough video:
Sting Alley
If you think that this side alley is a safe haven, you are quite wrong. This is a venue for close encounters. In this small area, there are at least 5-8 characters prowling for new victims.
Watch out for this vampire. She is, perhaps, one of the best performers in this scare zone.
The alley can get crowded occasionally. Interesting fact – this entire street is brightly lit most of the time. So it might be the easiest place to take photographs.
Now then, watch the video of this area:
Hauntings at the Library
While not a key attraction itself, the New York Library has a rather incredible projection effect this year. It distorts, gets overrun with crawling creatures (werewolves about to turn?), even sometimes gets sliced with three gashes – the key visual of this year’s Halloween Horror Nights.
I suppose, this is the grave digger. And here’s an occasional moment where the character switches with his counterpart. Switching is almost like a dramatic ritual in this year’s Halloween Horror Nights – it’s central to the performance of the characters. There’s even a short “ceremony” in this scare zone – when you hear a bell ringing, run to the library!
For the grave digger, he walks around his doppelganger in a circle a few times.
A Tesla Coil is placed near the library. Occasionally, it will be activated (you will hear the noise). While it’s unclear why it’s there, it’s a nice sight.
Birth of a Vampire
A spectacular performance of a vampire’s birth (and first kill) is staged at the New York library. This is staged a few times a night. For show schedule, check with park crew.
The park’s creative team has really thought about it all. The show lighting casts shadows of performers onto the nearby Rockefeller Center building. It can’t get any more dramatic than this.
There’s a piece of stage illusion involved. The coffin, when carried out, is opened and shown to be empty. After the ritual (and dragging of an unwilling victim), the coffin is open and viola~. The new vampire wastes no time.

Halloween Horror Nights
Hi Dejiki,
was wondering if I could bring a small bag along.
Do I still have to deposit my bag in the locker if I were to take the Mummy rollercoaster?
Will they be charging us every 30min also?
What if they run out of lockers for us to put our bags?
cheers!
Of course you can bring a bag to the park, but don’t bring a bag that is too big that would cause a hassle or tire you out while waiting in line. Bags and loose items will need to be stored at the lockers before entering Revenge of the Mummy.
Lockers are free to use for the duration of the displayed wait time at Revenge of the Mummy. If the wait is more than 30 minutes, the free use period will be adjusted accordingly (e.g: 60 minutes free rental period if the wait time is 50-60 minutes). Otherwise the default free period of 30 minutes will apply.
There are a hundreds of lockers at the park, split into 3 areas: 2 locker zones at Egypt, 1 very large one at Battlestar Galactica, so no worries really.
Hey there…! 😀 All of us, had a fun & terrifying night @ Halloween Horror Nights 3… Ummm… So this is my experience;
1) The Opening Scaremony was Spectacular..! 😀 It was such a Great Start for the event…
2) Scarezones-
a) The Attack Of The Vampires was really a fun & horrorfying scarezone… Probably the best for my taste… But I didn’t enjoy much, due to a lot of people… Especially people chasing & crowding over the scareactors…
b) The Convention Of Curses was more to be entertaining instead of horrorfying scarezone… It was really fun afterall… Theres a moment where the huge plant eating creature licked me when I’m taking picture with it… But, I really want the Ancient Egypt scarezone to be terrifying, due to previous 2, which aren’t that scary at all…
c) The Forbidden Forest was one of the scariest scarezone, due to using local culture… It was really scary, when seeing ghost that we’re familiar with… & I think USS should try using more local culture in Halloween Horror Nights… But I realised that outside of the Jurassic Park Gate, are lack of scareactors, which doesn’t make a terrifying entrance to The Forbidden Forest…
3) Haunted Houses-
a) Possession is generally good, but compared to the Insanitarium, I really prefer the Insanitarium… Probably due to cramp spaces & warm condition in Possession… & USS should improve on its crowd management, cause they keep pushing everyone till, I was stuck in 1 of the scene…
b) Songs Of Death was scary too, due to the local culture… I really understood the plot more of the Maiden Of The Opera through this Haunted House… But again, USS should improve on its crowd management, cause just queueing for 5 minutes, the still keep moving everyone, causing a major slowdown at the entrance…
c) Adrift was my favourite Haunted House, but compared to Dungeon Of Damnation, I prefer Dungeon Of Damnation due to bloody creatures roaming in there… At 1st there was a traffic jam in the 1st scene, but after I managed to slowdown & being left behind, I managed to enjoy myself all alone….
Overall, Halloween Horror Night 3 is phenomenal… & USS should improve on their crowd management, cause its getting popular every year… I suggest they create more nights with a suitable number of people… So, I’m also quite dissapointed, cause I really didn’t enjoy myself, due to the large crowd… & learnt that its better on the weekdays… But it was Fun..! Hoping to return on the 4th installment… 😀
PS: I didn’t managed to see the “Vampire Show”, could you post a video for me to look at it… Thanx..! 😀
Hi nicholas,
I went to HHN on October 26. This was my first time and I really impressed with all of the performance. It was entertaining and terrifying. Attack of the vampires is my favourite. I went there with my cousins and they all agreed that this was the best scare zones. Unfortunately my sister lost her iPhone at this zone. I think she lost it when she was running and try to hide behind me from the vampires 😀 overall it was a great night and I am planning to go to HHN again next year. Thanks to your blog I can apply your tips at that night.
Hi Novan, glad to hear that you had a great time. Did you report the loss of your sister’s iPhone at USS Guest Services?
hello dejiki, my name is cairn and i’m novan sister. yes we already report to USS Guest Service & went to lost and found. they said they’ll do their best and try to help me find my iPhone, but there was no result so my iPhone was gone for good. but i agree with my brother and all my cousins that attack of the vampire was the most terrifying zone ever and we really had a great time. i can’t wait for the next HHN.
Yes, I reported straight to lost and found services at USS. Later on monday, I visited USS again and asked about my case and there was no progress. Well, maybe it is quite a warning to those who carry his/her phone during HHN. As for my sister’s iPhone, let it remain a mystery 😀
