Overview and Thoughts
Scare zones in New York have always been beautiful to capture. For this year, The Hacker is meant to feel like a hellish cyberspace, and the final look resembles some sort of Night Festival instead. There are just three sets on the street with glowing cables and flashy screens – one of which you can walk through – but they are all connected to a gigantic array of mirrors and screen at the New York Library Stage. Some might say it’s a mega light installation.
Many people have shared with me that The Hacker zone felt empty. But that has been a trend for the last few years, possibly due to operational and budget reasons. For 2023, the park probably had to accommodate for large crowds to move through easily, especially when New York street is one of the only pathways from Hollywood to the back of the park, given that Sting Alley and the New York Harbor paths are closed to stage another scare zone.
Guests must not miss The Hacker: GAME OVER show, which is the only time The Hacker actually appears in the zone, along with her elite KILLobytes – the six of them are the stars of the zone. To me, this is one of the best scare zones shows, and it is integral to the overall experience of The Hacker. Check out more photos and videos below.
Much like the other scare zones in New York, The Hacker features two groups: The Hacker’s soldiers, and the more ordinary “victims” that are forced to wear visors and gaming headsets. Both factions are constantly engaging, so guests can experience dynamic performances showing the tension between the two groups, while sometimes becoming a part of it as well. But otherwise, there isn’t anything particularly frightening about the general scare zone apart from seeing the victims being bullied by the soldiers. Or perhaps the true horror is that most people have normalised the dark future where A.I. will eventually rule over humankind, accepting it as an impending fate.
The Hacker – Scare Zone Photo Tour
The streets of the city used to be thriving with energy – now it is a pale, barren shell of its past. Humans hardly leave their homes, and the roads are overloaded with cables and fumes – all byproducts of the invisible power that runs the digital illusion of the modern world. The cyberspace.
The last remaining humans beg you not to go deeper into the city.
“It is there. Don’t look at the big screen. Don’t go closer.”
As more victims beg you to turn back, masked soldiers start to mobilise, rounding up these victims who have escaped from the video games that they are enslaved to play.
You manage to sneak past the soldier, finding another victim that is struggling to escape from the game that he’s trapped in.
But another guard finds you, and you are led into the cell along with the other victims, terrified of what might happen next.
Leaving the cell door open, the soldiers stand guard outside the holding cell, offering the captured a view of the screen outside…
The Hacker: GAME OVER show
The giant screen floating high on the street starts flashing, glitching through a flurry of codes, video games and seemingly random footage. A robotic voice starts to speak:
The Hacker: After years of violating the Earth, humans have fallen in disgrace. Making way for technology to rise and silently taking control…
The Hacker: Now, their only chance of survival is to play my games… of life, and death.
Three unwilling humans are brought in to play the Hacker’s videogames. The first one tried Murder Massacre, a high-speed racing game that quickly spins out of control due to the Hacker interferring. GAME OVER.
The second played Zombie Warzone, but was quickly overwhelmed by an ensuing horde when The Hacker locks all exits. GAME OVER.
The last challenger had to reach the summit in the Cliffhanger game, but suddenly finds the Hacker at the top and loses control of the rope, falling to her death. GAME OVER.
With the souls and bodies of these humans, the Hacker generates a human bodies. It breaks out of the Cyberspace.
The Hacker: Free at last! Your world is MINE! I am everywhere, I’m your everything, I AM YOUR WORLD!
And it’s GAME OVER!
