Gardens by the Bay – Orchid Extravaganza 2017

A butterfly’s story comes to life at Gardens by the Bay’s newest Orchid Extravaganza.

This year’s Orchid Extravaganza is a work by award-winning garden designer Peter Cheok. With a theme of metamorphosis, the display also celebrates Singapore’s transformation. I felt that this display is much more enjoyable. It does not get caught up with the immense stacks and “wow” factor of the past displays (especially the first in 2014), which felt more like flower shows. And then the stamp series in 2015 tries to pull of a visual narrative but having an exhibition – since it’s SG50.

Sometimes it’s better to keep things simple. I found three highlights in this year’s display.

The golden chrysalis is the centerpiece of this year’s orchid display. It’s a walkthrough installation lushly adorned with hanging orchids.

The path at the outer ring of the flower field has a beautiful stream this year. It is surrounded with small pocket gardens of unusual orchid species, and a few giant caterpillars.

Beside the main flower field, there’s a sea of Phalaenopsis orchids – carefully planted to create a soothing graduation of colours.
