Uncover the birthplace of wild tulips at the 2021 Tulipmania: Its Wild Origins floral display, now showing at Gardens by the Bay.
The Gardens’ annual tulip show, Tulipmania, has returned after taking a break last year, due to disruptions caused by the pandemic.
The origins of the Tulips was explored in Tulipmania Rediscovered (2016), a floral display with a Turkish theme.
And now for “Its Wild Origins”, the story goes further back and into Kazakhstan, following in the footsteps of nomadic tribes that trekked through mountains of Central Asia. It is believed that tulips have first appeared in the wild at these mountains, and were then introduced to Turkey.
The Kazakh theme runs throughout the flower field, with a bazaar section at the back of the flower field.
The large hanging textiles and scenic props can create dramatic lighting around some blooms.
You can’t miss this colourful Yurt – a form of dwelling used by nomadic Kazakhs – the centerpiece of Tulipmania this year. This is of course, a special cross-section of a 4 metre-tall yurt.
This Yurt is on loan from the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Singapore, and is said to be built with traditional techniques, without nails or screws.
This is the Shanyrak – a circular opening at the top of the yurt. It is also part of the emblem of Kazakhstan.
The Yurt is furnished with traditional textiles and other interior decor items from Kazakhstan.
This year’s Tulipmania is held 6 months later than normal, so the Gardens sourced tulips from New Zealand instead of the Netherlands. As New Zealand is in the Southern hemisphere, it is now spring, and tulips are in bloom.
It seems like the Gardens may have gotten the timing just right, as most plots were already in bloom during the opening weekend (or perhaps due to a new source for Tulips). This rarely happened in past editions – typically there will be “rolling blooms”.
The ‘Red Princess’ double tulip.
The red and yellow bicolour tulip resembles some of the wild tulips from Kazakhstan, and is apparently the first time this variety is displayed at the Flower Dome.
And of course, the classic yellow tulip which is the mainstay of the Tulipmania displays at Flower Dome.
