Get a sneak peek at the new shows and experiences of A Universal Christmas at Universal Studios Singapore’s year-end event. Read on to find out more.
A Universal Christmas 2019
A Universal Christmas event is available to all park guests from 2 Dec 2019 till 1 Jan 2020. Here are some of the new shows and experiences at this festive event:
A Despicable Me Family Christmas
For the first time ever, you can meet up to 11 characters from the Despicable Me franchise at Universal Studios Singapore! A Despicable Me Family Christmas is a mini show followed by a Meet and Greet experience at Hollywood.
Lucy, Margo, Edith and Agnes will also be making their debut at Universal Studios Singapore, completing Gru’s family at this event.
They’ve even built a Christmas home set for the photo op.
For the Meet and Greet segment, there will be three lines set up. You can either queue for either set of Minions, or Gru’s family.
As this Meet and Greet only happens once a day, better check the park schedule when you visit so that you won’t miss this opportunity to meet, dance and snap photos with them all!
The Great Christmas Invention
The biggest show this year is taking place at the New York Library: The Great Christmas Invention brings us to Santa’s workshop, where we will see his latest invention in action. Using a new gizmo called Christmas Story Generator 3000, Santa will bring visitors through whimsical stories that weaves in the park’s animated characters.
It sort of feels like a ‘megamix’ of all the shows and experiences that the park has done in the past years.
First you have a pre-show, which is quickly followed by a short parade (from Vine Street to New York Library).
Santa arrives at New York on his Sleigh, but not without an entourage of dancers, reindeer stilt-walkers (in ‘family-friendly outfits’ this year) and an ensemble of unique characters that are part of the New York Christmas zone experience.
Santa and elf Bailey are the stars in the show. The duo, along with other dancer elves, uses the machine to create books after “recycling” some items.
After Santa starts reading, the stories come to life… with characters from the park making surprise appearances on stage.
Characters from Madagascar, Sesame Street, and Minions will appear.
Santa then tells us to think about our own stories, and then invites even more friends from the park to join him on stage.
The show then concludes with what the park calls the largest-ever Meet and Greet at Universal Studios Singapore, and it really is. During the Media Preview, the aRWSome Wishes 2019 charity event was also held concurrently, so numerous young guests had the chance to take photos with the park’s characters – all together.
Christmas at New York zone
Now that we’re already at New York – take a look at these colourful sets that are part of the Universal Christmas experience in this part of the park.
Designed to be a modern, ‘high-tech’ Christmas, there are three scenes: ‘Joy’, ‘Love’ and ‘Fun’.
The whole street looks dazzling at night with more lights and special effects switched on.
Just like the past years’ thematic zones, you’ll be able to meet and interact with a cast of eccentric characters here. Probably not throughout the whole day though – best to check with the park crew for show times.
More seasonal shows at Universal Studios Singapore
There are more seasonal street shows at the park during this season, so don’t miss Christmas Turntables (Hollywood), Rhythm Truck Christmas Edition (New York), A Tropical Christmas Party (Madagascar), and Dance For The Magic Christmas Beans (Far Far Away). At Pantages Hollywood Theater, Elmo’s TV Time will feature a slightly different ending with a festive touch. On select nights, Christmas Fireworks Spectacular will fill the air above the park’s lagoon with dazzling pyrotechnics.
Christmas at Hollywood zone
Let’s head back to the park entrance. Unlike the New York zone, the Hollywood area has modest amount of decorations.
It has gradually scaled down over the years, but this year, you can still find a few special spots to take photos, and meet park characters.
The Universal Studios Store has also completed its refresh – with extra holiday touches.
Seems like the renovations was to replace the flooring – it’s now matte marble tiles.
Some parts of the store design seem refreshed. Quite interesting that this part here has some attraction silhouettes from overseas: Optimus Prime (Transformers The Ride) and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit from Universal Orlando. Even the globe graphic here is distinctively Orlando’s version.
All of the store’s windows are also updated for the holidays.
Also it seems like the ‘spend and redeem souvenirs’ promotion, which was around for past seasonal events, is taking a break this Christmas. If you’re on the lookout for limited edition merchandise, you can still buy the Hello Kitty plush toys that I mentioned in the previous park update.
