Rainforest Lumina, Singapore Zoo’s new illuminated night walk attraction, tries to enchant – with mixed results.
As part of 45th Anniversary celebrations for Singapore’s most famous wildlife attraction,
When the Zoo closes for the night, several pathways and enclosures are transformed into new illuminated exhibits, as the real animals leave and animated projects take their place at some areas.
The trail is about one kilometre long and can take anytime from 30 to 50 minutes to complete.
Rainforest Lumina Photo Tour
Treetops – Illuminated trees with dramatic soundtrack.
Garden of Virtues – A space where the attraction’s Creature Crew characters are introduced.
Visitors can choose a bracelet (silicone wristband) of a character to accompany their journey.
Luminous Pathway – Laser dots transform the jungle into a galaxy to wander in.
Sing Like An Animal – With your voice, bring light and awaken the digital creatures at the Zoo’s iconic White Tiger enclosure.
Floor Lanterns – Showing the way as a constant companion.
Call of the Wild – The Zoo’s Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia becomes a canvas for a well-executed project mapping show.
However, the other parts of the valley are empty with lights and music on.
Ropes and low fences are used to block off areas that are not accessible. However, many of these are hidden in the shadows and some may walk into them.
Light Huts – Locked shut while painting the floor with shadows.
A random dead end that’s actually a photo backdrop.
Shimmering Islands – A mesmerising journey into the dark.
Play Like An Animal – A fun (but short) interactive exhibit – Bunny hop to summon the Creature Crew.
Food and Beverage zone – Not open for business.
Water – In preparation for Halloween Horror Nights.
Fire – Walk along synchronised eerie lights among the trees.
Wall of Fame – Remember the bracelets? Scan them here and become one with the Creature Crew.
Lantern Passage – A confusing conclusion to the Rainforest Lumina experience.
Rainforest Lumina review
Apart from some notable exhibits and spaces, Rainforest Lumina was rather underwhelming. Light and projection installations are so common now that many might feel disenchanted by the ones here, especially sophisticated installations being presented at numerous local art festivals for free.
Those hoping to visit this place for insta-worthy backdrops may also be disappointed with the technically challenging environment. However, there are still many opportunities for unusual shots, and if you love taking backlit/ silhouette photos – this is the place.
Perhaps if the event returns for a second run, they could expand the installations to more areas of the Zoo and include more impressive installations from the original Forest Lumina.
I would only recommend visiting Rainforest Lumina as a “finisher” attraction after a day (or night) at the other excellent parks here: the Singapore Zoo, River Safari and Night Safari. It is too much of a hassle and too high a price to pay to experience the Rainforest Lumina.

How to get to Rainforest Lumina at Singapore Zoo
The easiest and cheapest way to get to the Singapore Zoo is via the Mandai Khatib Shuttle, a service between the Singapore Zoo and Khatib MRT Station (North South Line NS14). As the service is only available till about 10:20pm, this is only recommended if you are visiting Rainforest Lumina early.
Just take the train to Khatib MRT Station, and walk to Exit A. Turn left, and you’ll see the signs (or likely a line is already there) for the Shuttle service. The fare is just a $1 each way, but payment is strictly via EZ-Link or NETS Flashpay only. You can check exact bus timings or even stalk the bus via the Beeline webapp.
The bus will stop at the Transport Hub in front of the Singapore Zoo, where Rainforest Lumina, Night Safari, and River Safari are all just a short walk away.
The last Mandai Khatib shuttle will depart the Singapore Zoo at 10:40pm!
