The New Maritime Experiential Museum at Resorts World Sentosa

Experience the historic maritime silk route like never before at the revamped Maritime Experiential Museum at Resorts World Sentosa.

After some nine months of renovations, the Maritime Experiential Museum (MEM) is ready to bring its guests on new adventures with its all-new features and redesigned galleries. The Museum will reopen on 29 December 2017.

This upgrade is much needed given the developments in visitor attractions in the last few years. The original souk and artifacts galleries, while visually attractive, formed a dated “show and tell” experience. Much of the revamp happened in these two areas. Typhoon Theatre, the iconic attraction-within-the-attraction, was left unchanged.

The Explorers

Four wayfarers, Marco Polo, Sang Nila Utama, Ibn Batuta and Zheng He, greet you at the Briefing Room.

Their force spirits will guide you through your journey in the museum.

After the introduction, a few of these thematic library spaces and map rooms introduce you to the various maritime discovery and trade routes.

Learn to Navigate

The library leads into the lower deck of a ship, where you can learn about maritime navigation, nautical knots and more through interactive exhibits.

The Jewel of Muscat

The deck windows open up to the Jewel of Muscat, the all-traditional ship that sailed from Oman to Singapore without the use of modern technology.

And now, you can explore the ship virtually with this high-tech tablet.

More vessels can be discovered in the next gallery. Speak to the crew member here to learn more.

Choose your own Adventure

And then you’re at the crossroads – you’ll need to go through a typhoon or survive a pirate attack to continue.

Typhoon Theatre

For $3, you can experience the perils of sailing into an unrelenting storm at this multimedia show. The ride media is same as the one that opened with the original museum back in 2011.

Pirate Encounter

Alternatively, head right and you can enter this burning ship.

The Pirate Encounter takes place in an entirely new space carved from the Bao Chuan’s hull.

It falls short when only simple effects such as gentle LED lines and projections fill the decks here. Maybe it needs performers or some physical effects. This is not Pirates of the Caribbean, unfortunately.

Ports of Call

Either paths will lead you to the basement of the Museum, where the maritime explorers congratulate you on your survival. WELL DONE.

The new Ports of Call areas are highly thematic spaces that are great spots to capture your moments in the museum. The Quanzhou and Malacca area are expansive and rich with detail.

The Malacca zone brings some iconic scenes to Singapore – to the joy of shutterbugs.

MEM’s extensive revamp fixes some of the issues of the original museum – namely its dated feel, and that the experience wasn’t that memorable – often shadowed by the S.E.A. Aquarium. This is still a niche museum, and it was a bold move to close the museum for most of 2017 to redesign the experience – and not just abandon ship for an entirely new concept. There are still pockets of empty spaces, which might be used to hold temporary experiences like the Pokemon Research Exhibition. With its new immersive exhibits and seasonal events, it might make it worthwhile to revisit. RWS is offering discounted tickets as part of the opening special.

The Museum is no longer the main entrance to the S.E.A. Aquarium, although a side gate at the basement level will link to the Aquarium, just like old times.
