Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase review

Super early for Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase ride preview

6 March 2013 Update: New photos added!

Tons of new photos showcasing the ride and its queue has been added throughout this post.

I’m back from the Annual Passholder Preview of Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase. Here is my trip report and overview of the attraction. Spoilers ahead.

Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase will officially open on 1st March 2013. The ride is currently in soft opening phase, operating in technical rehearsal mode from now till 29 February 2013. A special event, Sesame Street Carnival will be held from 1st March to 3rd March 2013 to celebrate the grand opening of this attraction.

The preview started late as there were technical difficulties in the morning. After that, the ride was operating smoothly for the rest of the afternoon.

I went on the ride a handful of times and all the show elements and effects appear to be working.

Loading Platform

This ride reminds me of Disney’s classic dark rides. The (slow) loading platform has a conveyor belt, and ride vehicles move past a long painted mural.

The queue is parallel to the loading platform (sounds familiar?). Anyone who has been on Peter Pan’s Flight at Disney Parks will recognize the similarity here.

More Details

What kind of ride is Spaghetti Space Chase?
This is an indoor dark ride where guests are brought through several scenes, featuring Sesame Street characters, in a slow moving vehicle. The vehicle may tilt slightly and change elevation gently (move upwards to a short height, and downwards later) to simulate flying and floating in space. This is not a high-speed roller coaster ride.

What are the minimum height requirements for children?
Guests must be at least 92cm to ride.
Children between 92cm and 122cm must be accompanied with a supervising adult.

Is this Spaghetti Space Chase suitable for guests with certain health concerns?
The park recommends that guests with any of the following conditions should not ride:
Expectant Mothers, Heart Conditions or Abnormal Blood Pressure, Back or Neck disorders, Motion sickness or dizziness, Sensitivity to strobe lights, Sensitivity to Fog.

The ride vehicle (presumably a Sesame Street space craft) sits two guests in a row, with two rows. This is a custom designed vehicle – a bit like Peter Pan’s Flight, but no element in front to block the line of sight of guests. A decorative canopy extends from the back of the vehicle to the top, masking the ride’s track system.

Spaghetti Space Chase - Elmo on Ride vehicle display
Ride vehicle display, with Elmo speaking to guests.

In each row there is a video display showing the space craft’s location on a map, and Elmo’s commentary (he shows up on the screen and talks). It is non-interactive.

Ride vehicle movement
The ride vehicle moves gently, slightly faster than Treasure Hunters at some moments. All turns are very gentle and gradual.

While the entire ride takes place in one level – no fancy elevator work from Transformers – there are moments of elevation change, such as flying into space. The ride vehicles are supposed to rock gently, but it does so with a very limited range.

Duration
Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase is an indoor dark ride that is about 2.5 minutes long.

Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase – review

My first reaction was:

I can’t find the right words to describe this ride.

It’s not that the ride is terrible, but I was bombarded with a lot of effects and audio from all directions. There was so much to take in: lots of dramatic lighting, mist/fog effects, a bit of water splash and characters talking from everywhere. It’s hard to make sense of anything because no one ever stops talking!

After taking the ride a few times to understand what is going on and recognize all the effects used, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at how the ride turned out. My expectations were lower than usual because this is a family ride and it would not be fair to compare with the more technically-impressive rides at Sci-Fi City. For a dark ride in this park, it is a huge improvement from Madagascar: A Crate Adventure. Fortunately, there aren’t any exasperatingly slow moments in Spaghetti Space Chase. In fact, this new ride makes A Crate Adventure feel like a big waste of time and space.

As the ride is cramped into a small building, all show elements are placed very close to the ride vehicle. When I say close, I mean that if an adult is were to reach out of the ride vehicle, they could actually touch some of the props. On the other hand, this is probably a nice feature for children to see characters up close.

It is an achievement that the ride designers managed to squeeze several scenes into the tiny ride building, although that resulted in the track layout zig-zagging around. The indoor queue is nested in a small corridor, and while themed, most of its elements are easily missed. The indoor area is also dimly lit, possible to hide how “flat” the walls really are (mostly floor to ceiling printed decals), with some minor extrusions.

Extended Review (Click to Expand)

The good bits

– Flying into space with Super Grover: This is very well done, with a mix of a projection, dramatic spinning lights, strobe effects, bursts of fog and gentle ascent. The “screen” used for the projection disappears into a starfield.

– Outer Space scenes: Nice star field effects with lights around and below the ride vehicle. The ride vehicle tilts a little here.

– Lots to See and Hear: There’s never a dull moment in this ride (after the slow crawl out of the loading platform). The Sesame Street and Lair show scenes have quite a bit of detail (that sadly, is hard to see because the vehicles are so close to the props!) The on-ride soundtrack music is cheerful and fitting, although there’s a lot of chatter from Elmo.

– Abby Cadabby moments: Very dramatic use of LED lighting, including one rather impressive swirl from her wand. That glittery wave provides a transition from outer space into Macaroni’s Lair.

– Seeing your space craft, and everyone on board, on the security monitors in Macaroni’s Lair: Very hilarious and priceless for guests to see themselves becoming part of the show elements.

– The cute and not scary, “safe for grandma and ah-boy” factor: The ride has a cute story and adorable characters. Nothing scary happens here (frankly, pasta is high in carbohydrates – so by stealing them all, the villain is actually doing you a favour). Screen on ride vehicle remains lit in the dark, offering very children some “security blanket” for fear of darkness, I guess. No shocking ride elements like sudden drops or sharp turns.

– Fully indoor and air-conditioned: Necessary for any ride to be comfortable in Singapore.

The not-so-good bits

– Sesame Street “animatronics” barely look or move like their puppet counterparts. They all look very plastic – furless – and have limited movement. Little effort was done to hide the cutaway lines for the mouth/arm joints. With the exception of two characters, all animated figures have the very simple “up and down” sort of mouth that do not resemble their puppet counterpart. There is no follow through/overlapping action (a basic principle of animation).

– Use of video screens for other characters, which have very different form of movements, creates a very incongruous experience. The characters on video screens are of puppets and move very expressively. This does not blend with the sculpted characters in the foreground at all. On the bright side, the video displayed are of very high quality – appearing sharp and vibrant.

– Sensory Bombardment: Too much is going on in most scenes and characters won’t stop talking – a drawback for trying to feature so many Sesame Street characters. Guests can only take a breather in a section of the outer space scenes. Elmo keeps appearing on the display in the ride vehicle. While this provides the illusion that Elmo is accompanying his “sidekicks”, most people I’ve asked never bothered to look because there are things to see outside.

– Characters Star-Trekking into Macaroni’s Lair. Not only is this strange and hilarious (characters look like ghosts on a fog screen), but really? Why was there even a need for a space adventure if everyone could just teleport there?

Missed opportunities

– Flying over buildings. Would be nice to have same experience as Peter Pan’s Flight, flying over New York city.

– Balanced experience on both sides. Due to the ride’s layout, most of the action happens on the right side of the vehicle.

– Pragmatic design for on-ride video displays. The displays could be used to display ride safety messages after guests are seated and before the ride actually begins (e.g: “Remain Seated and keep your arms and feet inside the vehicle”) than a “screensaver” showing the spacecraft on a map.

– Use of scents: A ride about food surely could have some smell-o-vision.

Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase - 5 Minutes Wait

I was surprised by the turn out today during the preview, as wait times were less than 5 minutes all afternoon. This is so different from the preview for Madagascar: A Crate Adventure. Then again, the preview went very smoothly today (as compared to Madagascar, which had several breakdowns). Loading and unloading was very efficient. Little time was wasted at the loading platform and the park crew at this attraction are friendly and courteous.

Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase - Empty Outdoor Queue
The outdoor switchbacks were not used today, as the indoor holding area was sufficient.

And for those who met up with me today: It was very nice to meet everyone and I had a wonderful time discussing about the ride, Universal Studios Singapore and theme parks around the world! 🙂

I just took the AP preview. It’s from 1000hrs to 1400hrs today. In my opinion, the ride is a bit short and probably more enjoyable for kids. It’s like a waterless “Madagascar” with better lighting and smoke effects. Overall decent, but I wish it was a bit longer. Still, nice to see many Sesame Street characters 🙂

    • Dejiki February 16, 2013 at 5:21 pm #

I agree that this ride has better smoke effects. The ones at Madagascar just don’t work as they should.

Hi dejiki just came back from USS today and it was a blast! Sesame street was awesome with the animatronics all working and the interactive screens at full function. Really, USS is bringing out the full force with the interactive screens better than Transformers. I mean it. Though they banned photography in the ride. Really, the queue line is short and cannot accomodate that many people and the external queue is bigger than the interior queue. Overall, along the likes of Peter’s Pan Flight/ET but much better in terms of theming and the interactive. I would give it a 9.5/10 due to the earlier technical difficulty.

  3. Siowman February 16, 2013 at 4:55 pm #

Went there today at 10am for the annual pass preview but was not ready due to technical problem. After waiting about 15 minutes, the entrance opened and took the ride 3 times. Ride was better than Madagascar Crate Adventure but much much shorter. The outer space segment was rather convincing. If Transformers is a 10/10 and Madagascar is 5/10 in terms of excitement, I give Space Chase a 6.5/10. Interesting enough for an adult and I enjoyed the ride no doubt.

  4. Allan Foo February 16, 2013 at 5:35 pm #

I also took the AP Preview and had 3 rounds of the ride! I was there at 10.30 am, and there was no queue at all! I would say it’s better then Madagascar, as it is a little more interesting, and maybe because the characters are closer.

Universal Studio is not that good with their audio-animatronics as compare to Disney, from my experience to most of their park around the world. Their animatronics are just not that animated. Madagascar definitely too few, like a low budget Disney’s It’s A Small World! Disney’s Splash Mountain is also better then Dudley Do-rights Ripsaw Falls in Universal’s Islands of Adventure (both are log flume ride) when come to audio-animatronics.

Yes, I do agree it’s a missed opportunity not to have it fly over the cityscape, like Peter Pan Flight or E. T., but judging from the tight litter space they could play with, I think they did a good job. The ride vehicle are more or less the same like E. T. – minus the BMX bicycles! OK, no name calling like E. T. too!

Yes, I would rate it 6.5/10 too!

    • Dejiki February 16, 2013 at 6:56 pm #

You’re right about that. Disney’s latest generation attractions have the most realistic and expressive animatronics. The characters at Radiator Spring Racers seem so life-like and true to the film. It’s hard to even compare with what they had decades ago.

      • Allan Foo February 16, 2013 at 8:08 pm #

Yes, to boost the popularity of Disney California Adventure, they have installed some of the best attractions there! Other then Radiator Spring Races, there are also The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure and World Of Colors! The whole Sunshine Plaza also remodeled into Buena Vista Street, Gold Gate monorail Bridge in to Glendale-Hyperion Bridge! Plus a bit of re-theming here and there, almost 50% of the park are new!

Big Disney fan here, and am planning a trip back this October, hopefully closer to Halloween period. They transform Haunted Mansion into Haunted Mansion Holiday, using characters and theme for The Nightmare Before Christmas! It was beautiful, and I would love to see it again!

The animatronics in the new Fantasyland in disneyworld is also pretty impressive.

Is it open to all Annual Passholders? I’m a Universal Express AP Holder but I didn’t receive any email regarding this preview. Is it still on tomorrow?

    • Dejiki February 16, 2013 at 9:02 pm #

The preview tomorrow is for RWS Invites members with invitation package.

I heard from one crew member that previews will be held tomorrow for APs, but when I asked other crew members for confirmation, they said that there isn’t a preview tomorrow.

I would advise that you visit the park sometime next week as this ride will be soft opening around then.

      • Philip February 16, 2013 at 9:05 pm #

Thanks for the information. I may still head down tomorrow because I’m pretty certain they will not turn me away. 🙂

  6. Timothy law February 16, 2013 at 10:34 pm #

Hahah I took the ride 7 times 😛 hahah I live the taking off part .loved the effects but the ending after the friends enter the space lair and before take off was quite boring and also the ride although seems slow it was still a very short ride and I don’t really understand why they need to write on the warning board about sudden tiltings and accelerations?

    • Dejiki February 16, 2013 at 10:39 pm #

Nice to hear about your thoughts!

I guess as this ride is designed for a wide audience (from grandparents to grandchildren), there is a need to state it as that way, because with the effects it could be perceived as “sudden”. Best to be extra careful when it comes to this sort of information. The ride vehicles are supposed to tilt more than it does today.

  7. Michael Lau February 16, 2013 at 10:59 pm #

Nice review… Was sooo amazed of the ride in that confined space…. The lightings were amazing.. I like the part where Abby Cadabby Appear and lead us to Macaronis Lair, Also the part where we are spotted on the intruders list…

    • Dejiki February 16, 2013 at 11:50 pm #

Yes, that intruder bit was funny, though not everyone saw that effect. Probably because it was just one screen and not “exaggerated” and shown on several screens.

My wife and I are passholders and enjoy your website. We rode today several times too, and really enjoyed it. We had no expectations and liked the silly plot. Very Sesame St. and Kooky. They put alot into the small space. We think they did a good job at populating it with lots of characters and effects. Really liked that everything was so close. We didn’t mind the “video” characters being more animated than the real ones. It all added to the fun. The space scenes were good. Liked the blastoff scene of breaking through clouds to stars, the space ship where he captured Super Grover and Abby’s magical bit. Also, the Martians were great!!! “Yip yip yip yip…Spaghettti” Love them! Classic!! The Star Trek beaming down part made sense to us. I think it is Abby who brings the group to help. She breaks us free of the green tractor beam and says “Help is on the way” or something similar. When they all appear to beam down, it’s a girl’s voice we hear. Thought that Super Grover being more of a hendrance than a help was spot on. Definitely lots to look at and not boring and long like Madagascar. Each time we rode we appreciated something new. I agree having Elmo with you will make the dark parts less scary for the little ones. I rate it 7.5/10. My wife says 8/10 and declares as I type this: “Needs more Cookie Monster!” LOL.

  9. weekiat February 17, 2013 at 4:21 am #

Great review nicholas. Once again detailed and accurate review of the ride!
I was very disappointed with the animatronics of the ride too. I think it might actually be worst the madagascar!

the plastic really doesnt work at all…

    • Dejiki February 17, 2013 at 8:11 am #

      Hi Wee Kiat, thanks! 😀

Madagascar’s character figures and “animatronics” do look better. They resemble their film counterparts a lot more.

  10. Zooish February 17, 2013 at 5:25 am #

Disney’s animatronics are the industry gold standard and they continue raising the bar – Beauty and the Beast at the new Fantasyland has jaw-dropping animatronics, particularly Lumiere (although I believe Lumiere is some form of puppet rather than mechanical).
Not an AP holder so I’ll have to wait till March to ride Space Chase. I have a soft spot for Sesame Street so I hope the ride won’t disappoint. i don’t like the queue lines on the street though, it messes up the look and feel of New York zone.

    • Awangku February 17, 2013 at 2:38 pm #

Disney also build a freaking flying dragon . A FLYING DRAGON!!!! Disney can never compete with anyone. They are too good. I’m still shock that they build a flying fire breathing dragon that fly above the park last time.

    • Dejiki February 20, 2013 at 12:15 am #

Lumiere is a really impressive figure, and you’re right, it’s a puppet (actually, a hybrid of mechanisms, including the smallest internal face projection system ever built for a moving figure).

There are a lot of details at the first scene of this ride (Sesame Street) that are easily missed due to the tight viewing distance between guests and show elements. I believe you mentioned Hooper’s store in a comment on another entry. The store is present in that scene, along with several other less common characters that may be hard to spot (as they are 2D videos on displays or placed too high) in one ride-through.

The queue lines on the street does ruin the look of New York zone, especially when the queue starts indoors. The outdoor area is a switchback zone on its own, linked indoors via two doors (see my photo of the exit and you’ll notice two doors letting natural light in). It’s quite a jarring experience – going in and out – and because of the outdoor queue design, the park plays queue soundtrack loop along that side of New York street. The good part about this design is that once guests are in the queue, they are completely sheltered.

      • Zooish February 21, 2013 at 12:39 am #

Just saw a ride POV video and the animatronics really do look very stiff.. a very far cry from Disney’s standards. The flow of the ride is good though and there’s lots to take in for such a short ride.

  11. vincent February 17, 2013 at 7:40 am #

Seems that everyone mentioned the new ride is too short. i took the little mermaid ride in the new fantasyland on tuesday audio animatronics is great. only complain is too short. seven dwarves construction site is huge. i sure this will be the main attraction in magic kingdow open 2014. be our guest restaurant waiting time is 1hrs plus just to have lunch. LOL

    • Dejiki February 17, 2013 at 11:21 am #

The Little Mermaid ride has very impressive Audio-animatronics. I’ve never expected AAs moving so smoothly and with a lot of subtle details (hair movement, eyes blinking) especially when it’s a ride for children.

  12. Vincent February 17, 2013 at 7:41 am #

Nice meeting you dejiki at the AP preview. We had a nice time discussing the ride. I too felt that the ride was a nice addition to the park but probably only remain as a good C and maybe bordering on a low D ticket attraction. But the ride system does differentiate it from other rides in the park.
Overall, the theme and layout does resemble the ride it was probably designed for: ET adventure; with the space scenes and the arrival at ET’s planet. But due to space constraints, the ride vehicle would probably be very much smaller (I recall ET ride vehicle as 3 x 3 layout).

    Thoughts:
    1) Water spray @ the lair –> huh? Didn’t get the cheese reference till you pointed out
    2) Loved ‘Anderson Cucumber” LOL

    • Dejiki February 17, 2013 at 11:18 am #

It was great meeting you and I enjoyed discussing the park (and desperate need for ride rehabs!).

This ride does seem to have emerged from abandoned plans for Singapore’s unique “E.T. The Flight Home” ride.

I felt that the water spray was very unnecessary, and it left a (growing) puddle on the sloped floor. Hope it doesn’t reach anything electrical.

  14. Poppy February 19, 2013 at 4:00 pm #

I’m an AP holder, will the preview be on until 29th February? I didn’t receive any email about this.

    • Dejiki February 19, 2013 at 4:05 pm #

      Hi Poppy,

At the moment the ride is in Technical Rehearsal, meaning that all park guests can experience the ride (although the ride may not be operating for the entire day during this soft opening phase).

Have you received other Annual Pass Events/Updates emails from USS? If you haven’t had any at all, please go to the Annual Pass office and verify/update your email address.

      • Poppy February 19, 2013 at 4:15 pm #

Thanks, I’ll be visiting the place soon!

  15. Nicole February 28, 2013 at 8:58 am #

Are you going for the opening ceremony of the ride on the 1st of March? If so, can you please do a review of it? I can’t make it for the opening myself because of time constraints.
